The University of Florida’s Student Health Care Center (SHCC) is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant for its ambulatory clinic. Under the direct supervision of a Team RN and the responsibility of a physician, the CMA assists health care professionals in examining and treating ambulatory patients. Duties include preparing patients and clinical environments, collecting objective patient data, performing point-of-care tests and electrocardiograms, assisting with examinations and procedures, and providing post-treatment care. The CMA follows universal precautions and infection-control guidelines, applies age-specific care, and alerts RNs or providers to abnormal findings. Medical questions are referred to RNs or providers. The role includes supporting patient care through vital signs, visual screenings, heights and weights, peak-flow readings, blood draws, specimen collection and processing, and patient observation. The CMA may assist with minor surgery and pelvic examinations and perform clinic procedures such as phlebotomy, sterile dressings, suture or staple removal, ear irrigation, and nebulizer treatments. Medication-related duties, as directed by a physician, may include preparing and administering medications, immunizations, non-vaccine IM and SC injections, oral medications, eye drops, and TST (PPD) administration and result reading; IV medication administration is excluded. The CMA may pend and call in prescriptions, authorize drug refills, and provide prescription information to pharmacies. The CMA maintains clean and orderly clinical areas and equipment, disinfects rooms and items that touch patients between visits while wearing appropriate PPE, and cleans, wraps, and autoclaves instruments. The role also includes checking temperature logs, maintaining supplies and inventory, managing linens, assisting with training new CMAs, and participating in daily team huddles and monthly staff meetings. The CMA may perform EKGs in the Radiology department during athlete physical exams as needed, rotate to other SHCC areas, provide Break Week coverage in the SMAC Team, and perform other assigned tasks. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or weekdays adjusted to FTE needs. The position is 40 hours per week; hours and days may vary according to SHCC needs, and weekend and other clinical-area coverage is assigned. The SHCC is an AAAHC-accredited center in a WELL-certified building on the University of Florida campus, offering primary care, sports medicine, urgent care, gynecology, psychiatry, allergy/immunization services, travel medicine, radiology, pharmacy, laboratory, and physical therapy services.
