About The Position

The Center for Innovation Generalist position at the Fayetteville Public Library is responsible for providing exemplary customer service, technical support, and program assistance within the Center for Innovation and across all library locations. This role involves engaging with patrons, understanding their needs, recommending resources, and troubleshooting technical issues. The Generalist will also manage library materials, assist with program preparation and execution, and maintain the setup of innovation suites. A key aspect of the role is staying current with Center for Innovation technologies and contributing to the smooth operation of the department through various duties and special projects.

Requirements

  • High school or GED, plus 6 to 12 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum age to meet AOSH requirements for working near an automated conveyor and sorting system.
  • Intermediate computer and software skills including experience with Microsoft operating systems, Office Software, and Programming Languages.
  • Understanding of basic networking concepts.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Basic math skills including the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment, including a telephone, printer, copier, scanner, fax machine, and hand-held radio.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively greet and establish rapport with patrons, engaging them in conversations about library materials and services, and providing exemplary customer service in person and at all library locations.
  • Answer directional and general questions about library programs and services, and refer callers and visitors to the appropriate staff or service desk.
  • Staff Center for Innovation desks as needed.
  • Effectively communicate with patrons regarding library products, services, policies, responsibilities, and code of conduct.
  • Blend creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making to positively impact the customer experience, de-escalate negative situations, and resolve customer questions and concerns.
  • Ask open-ended questions to assess customer needs, tailor approach, and provide recommendations using institutional knowledge to connect customers with the right solution for routine and complex inquiries.
  • Provide first-line technical support for staff and patron issues, offering basic troubleshooting assistance for Center for Innovation suites.
  • Check out, check in, and renew all materials, including atypical items like electronics and tools, using the integrated library system.
  • Assist with multiple high-quality Center for Innovation programs through prep-work, attendance tracking, email communications, and supporting department programs.
  • Ensure innovation suites are set up for patrons with requested equipment.
  • Register, check in, and maintain patron registrations for various suites using Communico.
  • Assist with library services, programs, and outreach opportunities as needed.
  • Keep abreast of current and changing Center for Innovation technologies to answer patron questions.
  • Display excellent time management, attention to detail, problem-solving, and organizational skills, working proactively to balance multiple tasks and prioritize work with a sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safety equipment and procedures, minimizing risk of injury and maintaining equipment in like-new condition.
  • Collaborate with supervisor on departmental projects for smooth operation.
  • Help orient new staff and train staff members as assigned.
  • Conduct special projects as assigned.
  • Represent the department on various library committees as assigned.
  • Protect library assets and ensure building security by monitoring security gates, adhering to policies, and following closing procedures.
  • Assume personal responsibility for building maintenance and solving minor issues.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
