About The Position

Performs general labor and maintenance duties in cemetery care, including cutting grass, trimming shrubs, opening and closing grave sites, removing leaves, clearing debris, and preparing grave sites for funerals. The role may involve assisting with customer complaints in a friendly, tactful, and courteous manner; loading and unloading construction materials; maintaining assigned equipment; reporting problems or unusual situations to a supervisor; and helping remove debris during emergencies. Other duties may be assigned as needed, and shifts may vary according to the needs of the city. The supervisor makes assignments, and the employee plans and uses initiative to carry them out. Work is evaluated for technical soundness. The position requires working in all weather conditions and around moving equipment and vehicles. The employee may be called out during emergencies.

Requirements

Experience in a similar or related field is preferred.
High school education, a GED certificate, or equivalent experience.
Excellent safety and attendance records.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to operate equipment assigned to the department.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers and the public.
Ability to use and follow appropriate safety procedures and regulations.
Ability to perform varied assignments, including grass cutting, general maintenance, and opening and closing grave sites.
Ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
Ability to work in all weather conditions and around moving equipment and vehicles.
Ability to stoop, bend, lift, and crawl into and out of trucks.
Ability to lift 50 pounds, and more on occasion.
Availability to be called out during emergencies.

Responsibilities

Cut grass, trim shrubs, remove leaves, clear debris, and perform general cemetery maintenance.
Open and close grave sites and assist in preparing sites for funerals.
Assist in addressing customer complaints in a friendly, tactful, and courteous manner.
Operate assigned trucks, including pick-up, flatbed, and dump trucks.
Operate assigned equipment such as gasoline weed eaters, hedge trimmers, and chainsaws.
Load and unload dirt, sand, gravel, bricks, concrete blocks, and other materials required for department operations.
Perform daily preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.
Report problems or unusual situations to the supervisor.
Assist with debris removal and cleanup during emergencies.
Perform other assigned duties as needed.
