About The Position

Apple's RF Transmitter Systems Engineering team develops transmitter architectures and solutions for Apple wireless products. The engineer works with architecture and systems engineering teams, RF design teams, and software teams to assess, specify, and drive transmitter concepts focused on leading-edge performance and quality. The role translates cellular system requirements into RF transmitter line-up and component requirements, specifies algorithms and control infrastructure, and leads hardware/software partitioning. It also involves modeling, simulation, performance analysis, measurement correlation, and identifying requirements, impacts, timelines, and risks. The engineer aligns requirements, design targets, and trade-offs with hardware design and software engineering teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree at minimum, with relevant RF experience including cellular transmit architectures; alternatively, a Ph.D. with previous work on cellular topics.
  • Knowledge of cellular radio and 3GPP standards, including GSM, UMTS, LTE, LTE-A, and 5G NR, as well as RF aspects, system use cases, and transmitter waveforms.
  • Familiarity with RF systems, RF front-end components (power amplifiers, filters, switches, and power management), and transceiver architecture, including line-up design and trade-offs involving gain, linearity, noise, power, and thermal considerations.
  • Experience with hardware and software co-design and an understanding of trade-offs between analog and digital hardware and firmware implementations.
  • Strong analytical skills, proactive use of AI tools, and ability to collaborate and communicate across multicultural, global teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of translating top-level RF requirements into specifications for RF front-end and transceiver architecture and building blocks.
  • Initial expertise in RF transmitter system-level concepts, control and data translation into modulations, and control procedures such as power control, digital predistortion, and envelope tracking.
  • RF front-end and RFIC system modeling and simulation experience.
  • Expertise in RF front-end architectures, technologies, and design.
  • Knowledge of digital signal processing and mixed-signal circuit design.
  • Understanding of SoC integration constraints and multi-chip RF architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Translate cellular system-level and performance requirements into requirements for the transmitter line-up and RF front-end components, transceiver, and system firmware.
  • Understand and specify RF algorithms, such as power control and calibration, and define RF control infrastructure, including compute resources, interfaces, memory, and timing constraints.
  • Lead hardware/software partitioning of RF algorithms, balancing flexibility, latency, area, and power.
  • Develop models and run simulations using tools such as MATLAB, Python, and C for functional verification, performance analysis, and measurement correlation.
  • Identify and analyze critical requirements and assess system performance impacts, timelines, and risks.
  • Align requirements, design targets, and trade-offs with hardware design, software engineering, and other teams.
