Drivers operate heavy-duty trucks equipped with front-, side-, or rear-end load lift attachments, depending on the line of business and vehicle. They transport materials to disposal, transfer, or recycling facilities when trucks reach legal load capacity and provide pickup service for waste or recyclable containers. Depending on the driving assignment, duties may include collecting commercial containers, residential household waste or recyclables, or preparing, loading, and transporting roll-off containers. The work involves navigating congested roadways, driveways, alleyways, and lots; some routes may involve tight overhead environments. Skilled backing maneuvers are essential. Containers may weigh more than 1,000 pounds and may need to be moved to a pickup area. The role requires safe operation of the assigned vehicle and compliance with company safety rules and applicable OSHA, DOT, and other laws. Drivers inspect vehicles, report safety and service issues, follow route assignments, complete route documentation, and work with operations staff to meet customer needs. This is a safety-sensitive role requiring compliance with safety protocols and applicable drug and alcohol testing requirements.
