About The Position

The CDL Instructor provides classroom instruction, road and range training, defensive driving instruction, and other applicable training or retraining to help students obtain their commercial driving licenses. Stevens Driving Academy provides CDL training and job placement for aspiring drivers, as well as continuing education and retraining for experienced drivers. The role focuses on helping students become safe, defensive drivers and is not an over-the-road driving position; the instructor is home every day.

Requirements

• Active Class A CDL license.
• Clean drug screen, background, and motor vehicle records.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Effective communication and presentation skills.
• Patience and sensitivity to others’ learning needs.
• Sound judgment and flexibility in handling changing priorities.
• At least 3 years of recent, verifiable over-the-road driving experience within the last 10 years.
• Skills and abilities in driving and managing a tractor-trailer, vehicle control, backing, pre-trip inspections, on-road driving, lane changes, turning, braking, and record maintenance.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, stretch, bend, and move freely during training exercises.
• Ability to work in changing temperatures and inclement weather.

Nice To Haves

• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to demonstrate skills in the classroom and on the range.

Responsibilities

• Teach students to identify and diagnose vehicle malfunctions through pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections.
• Observe and instruct students in over-the-road skills, including backing, lane control, and axle weights.
• Instruct students in using an automatic transmission in various driving conditions, including highway, city, day, night, and inclement weather conditions.
• Demonstrate the use of onboard vehicle communication and routing systems.
• Emphasize the importance of safety.
• Evaluate student progress and grade students throughout the program.
• Maintain student files in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
• Provide exceptional customer service to students.
