About The Position

The CDL School Instructor provides classroom instruction, road and range training, defensive driving instruction, and other training or retraining to help students obtain their commercial driving licenses. Stevens Transport provides CDL training and job placement for people starting a driving career, as well as continuing education and retraining for experienced drivers. The role is suited to positive, energetic instructors who can explain concepts clearly and use personal experience to make training relatable. This is not an over-the-road position; instructors are home every day.

Requirements

• Active Class A CDL license.
• Clean drug screen, background, and motor vehicle records.
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Effective communication and presentation skills.
• Patience and sensitivity to others’ learning needs.
• Sound judgment and the ability to handle changing priorities flexibly.
• At least 3 years of recent, verifiable over-the-road driving experience within the last 10 years.
• Ability to drive and manage a tractor-trailer.
• Skills in vehicle control, backing, pre-trip inspections, on-road driving, lane changes, turning, braking, and record maintenance.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, tolerate changing temperatures and inclement weather, and stretch, bend, and move freely during training exercises.

Responsibilities

• Teach students how and where to diagnose vehicle malfunctions through pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections.
• Observe students’ over-the-road skills, including backing, lane control, and axle-weight awareness.
• Instruct students on using an automatic transmission in varied driving conditions, including highway and city driving, daytime and nighttime driving, and inclement weather.
• Demonstrate the use of onboard vehicle communication and routing systems.
• Emphasize the importance of safety.
• Evaluate student progress and grade students throughout the program.
• Maintain student files in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
• Provide exceptional customer service to students.
