About The Position

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students and adult sponsors to and from various locations, including home, school sites, and field trips. The driver will operate according to assigned schedules and routes, ensuring the safety and conduct of all passengers. This role requires adherence to traffic laws, district policies, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and well-functioning vehicle.

Requirements

  • Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with Passenger (P) and School (S) endorsements
  • Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
  • Meet all state (TEA) qualifications for school bus drivers

  • Accredited High School Diploma or equivalent (U.S.A. equivalency) preferred
  • Bilingual preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assume charge of the bus and passengers, ensuring safety and proper conduct.
  • Transport only authorized students and adult sponsors, obeying all traffic laws and district policy.
  • Operate according to assigned schedules and routes, transporting passengers to and from home, school sites, and on field trips.
  • Be accessible to dispatcher or supervisor for daily assignments, covering routes and/or other runs as directed.
  • Provide notification of delays in scheduled routes.
  • Assist and instruct passengers in proper loading and unloading procedures.
  • Ensure a proper sweep of the bus to prevent unattended passengers and ensure belongings are taken.
  • Secure wheelchairs on the bus, including safety straps and seatbelts/harnesses.
  • Ensure students are seated using seat belts at all times.
  • Document and report discipline problems to the transportation supervisor.
  • Report to work on time, be reliable for regular and overtime work, and be absent only with good cause.
  • Make neat, legible, and accurate transportation records as required.
  • Maintain a clean bus externally and internally, maintain appropriate fuel levels, conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and report maintenance problems via the Samsara system.
  • Render assistance if needed when the bus breaks down or is involved in an accident, and report all accidents according to protocol.
  • Attend all assigned training, safety meetings, and in-service meetings.
  • Be adaptable and flexible in acceptance of changes in techniques and procedures.
  • Follow Dallas ISD Employee Standards of Conduct, exhibit good judgment, work effectively with others, and follow the chain of command.
  • Present a positive role model for patrons that supports the goals of Dallas ISD.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with parents and school staff.
  • Maintain a disciplined decorum of the bus conducive to passenger safety and property protection.
  • Perform all other tasks and duties as assigned.
