This refrigerated regional driving lane is designed for new drivers who have recently completed CDL school; experienced hires are not placed in the program. Drivers learn reefer freight with a mentor while running regional routes in the western states. The lane serves California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and Arizona, with some runs into Utah. Loads may pass near home during a trip. Training lasts 3 to 5 weeks, totaling 200 to 250 hours with a mentor, and pays $850 per week. After training, drivers average $1,000 to $1,100 per week. Solo drivers receive a $1,000 weekly pay guarantee for their first three months. Drivers typically cover 1,800 to 2,200 miles per week and spend about two weeks out followed by two days at home. The truck stays at the Jurupa Valley terminal on days off. Freight is no-touch, though drivers wait for live load and unload appointments. Reefer runs pay two cents more per mile than dry van, have longer hauls, and offer higher stop pay. Loads from 25 to 99 miles pay an additional $25 on top of mileage, and stops pay $25 each. Drivers may earn up to six cents more per mile each month by reaching 9,200 miles, averaging 7 miles per gallon, and remaining accident-free. Orientation lasts two days or less and pays $300 once hired. A one-way bus ticket to orientation is reimbursed with a receipt. Trucks are late-model tractors averaging about a year and a half old. After training, drivers may bring one approved dog weighing up to 40 pounds. A rider program is available to solo drivers.
