About The Position

Norfolk State University, Department of Facilities Management, is currently seeking Carpenters. The Department of Facilities Management provides a campus environment that is conducive to working and learning, through systematic maintenance, repair, and renovation and construction of campus buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Work requires knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of experience and training related to Carpentry.
  • Experience utilizing tools, including hammers, power tools, ladders, measuring tape, mixing machines, electric saws, and other construction industry tools.
  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational certification and/or military experience in the carpentry field.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs, restores, and makes minor repairs to various types of building infrastructure systems including windows, frames, baseboards, interior molding, walls, doorframes, etc.
  • Ensures all maintenance efforts are in compliance with city and state code, and agency regulations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, inspects building infrastructures; creates photographic documentation.
  • Cleans roof drains, removes debris, and performs general carpentry tasks as assigned.
  • Reads schematics, blueprints and various structure diagrams in efforts to ascertain the status and efforts needed in repairing/maintaining various infrastructures.
  • Climb ladders and perform routine inspections.
  • Work independently on assignments of various scale.
  • Utilize tools, including hammers, power tools, ladders, measuring tape, mixing machines, electric saws, and other construction industry tools.
  • Interface effectively, both verbally and in writing, and provide quality customer service.
  • Respond to emergencies, both before and after business hours.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift objects up of 50 pounds unassisted.
