About The Position

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department Chairperson at Methuen High School functions as an administrator with complete charge of the department. The primary responsibility is supervising curriculum development, instruction, and classroom management within the CTE discipline to ensure the fulfillment of the MHS Vision of a Graduate. This role involves overseeing the department's overall operations and teaching staff in Grades 9-12.

Requirements

  • Hold or be eligible to hold a Massachusetts teaching license in the relevant discipline and a supervisory certificate
  • Hold a master's degree or higher from an accredited institution in the discipline or in administration/supervision
  • Demonstrate knowledge of modern comprehensive high school philosophy, curriculum theory and design, and the supervision of professional staff
  • Show evidence of a continuing interest in professional and personal self-improvement
  • Have satisfactory teaching experience--preferably a minimum of five years at the secondary level and in a vocational setting

Responsibilities

  • Serves as evaluator for all teachers in the department
  • Supervises the ongoing development, implementation, assessment, and revision of curriculum in the department
  • Supervises instructional planning, delivery, and assessment in the department to ensure implementation of the curriculum for maximum student achievement
  • Serves as a resource person for staff implementing new instructional strategies and curricula
  • Orders books and other materials to support instruction in the department
  • Assists teachers in counseling students and parents in regard to course selection and other academic issues
  • Monitors the overall student management procedures employed by teachers to maintain decorum, both during classes and in the corridors between classes
  • Plans and leads departmental meetings to address concerns relating to curriculum, instruction, and classroom management
  • Assists in the screening, interviewing, and orientation of new personnel in the discipline
  • Advises the principal on teacher assignments and scheduling
  • Serves as a liaison to facilitate communication between the principal and the teaching staff
  • Participates in and delivers professional development to address new trends in the discipline and its related pedagogy
  • Prepares the department budget and accounts for any departmental fundraising activities
  • Serves as liaison to the senior custodian responsible for the physical maintenance of the department's classrooms
  • Ensures that teachers meet contractual requirements in regard to teaching responsibilities and non-instructional duties
  • Facilitate the formation of Program Advisory Committees (PAC) and General PAC
  • Meet compliance requirements for Chapter 74 and non-Chapter 74 programs
  • Work to grow the CTE department by applying to add additional Chapter 74 programs and adding seats to existing programs
  • Establish Innovation Pathways at Methuen High School
  • Collaborate with counseling department on Early College Oversight
  • Support upper school students' exposure to CTE programming at MHS; advertise the program and its offerings to the larger community
  • Oversee CTE-related grants
  • Seek out and pursue state, federal, and private grant funding for CTE
  • Foster, develop, and maintain partnerships with MassHire and workforce development
  • Oversee CTE externship program, assist in finding student placements and developing community partnerships
  • Collaborate with MHS administrative team to execute the goals of CTE programming and support the needs of all students
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with all CTE program-specific certification, licensure, safety, and training requirements, including maintaining required instructor credentials and ensuring students have access to and complete required industry-recognized certifications and safety training.
  • Assumes other duties which may be assigned from time to time consistent with the job goal, general responsibilities, and specific duties as described above.

Benefits

  • Ten-month year. Salary determined by the current contract between Unit B and the Methuen School Committee.
