About The Position

This role involves determining risk factors for hereditary diseases and disorders in patients. The supervisor provides information to healthcare providers, individuals, and families concerned about inherited conditions. They advise individuals and families to support informed decision-making and coping methods for those at risk. The position also includes conducting research related to genetic conditions or genetic counseling and supervising Genetic Counselors responsible for patient evaluation, genetic testing, and patient counseling. Assignments are received as objectives with goals and the processes to achieve them.

Requirements

Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a genetic counselor
Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment
Solid organizational and customer service skills to structure unit operations and lead assigned staff in an efficient and effective manner
Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, coordinate and integrate with others throughout the organization
Solid verbal and written communication skills to explain technical genetic concepts and communicate sensitive information to patients and families
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
Masters' Degree in clinical genetic counseling
Minimum of 3 years of recent experience in Cardiovascular genetic counseling
Current California Genetic Counseling License
Board certified by American Board of Genetic Counseling or American Board of Medical Genetics

Responsibilities

Supervises and schedules staff and coordinates department operations, resolves system issues, advises on latest research, functions as a clinical and operational resource, and assists with escalated issues
Develops administrative systems that ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and external regulations
Participates in the implementation of quality improvement initiatives including training programs to improve counseling skills and knowledge of the latest genetic research findings
Collects and analyzes data to support proposals of ways to improve productivity
Participates in genetic counseling fiscal oversight and in annual budget preparation
Leads or is a major contributor to grant applications from local, national or federal funding agencies
Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, works closely with medical providers in evaluating patients and families at high risk for hereditary disorders
Participates in and leads research studies; tracks data and reports outcomes accordingly
Integrates program development with national registries and research efforts
Participates in developing outreach and education program plans and materials for referring physicians within and outside the UC network
Oversees Genetic Counselors in daily operations, ensuring adherence to ethics and quality standards and external regulations
Communicates genetic risks, medical information and testing / screening options to patients in a supportive and understandable manner. Prepares clients for disclosure of results. Provides short term supportive counseling and facilitates informed decision making. Oversees and coordinates collection and analysis of pertinent medical records and ongoing case management.
Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in decision-making on hiring, salary actions, terminations, performance ratings, and other human resources matters
Pursues professional development and facilitates access for subordinate staff to ongoing training, development, and educational opportunities in all relevant specialties and categories of care
Ensures that all relevant licenses and certifications are current and properly documented
