The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports the genetic counseling and testing service. Specific duties include but are not limited to: referral development; provider and patient education; patient management; coordination of genetic testing; clinical research; and assistance with administrative projects. Responsibilities

  • Act as a liaison between the genetic counselors and referring providers to develop evidence-based referral processes and provide education regarding identification of patients appropriate for genetic counseling.
  • Provide pre- and post- counseling education to patients and family members to help facilitate an informed patient experience and to aid in the creation of appropriate pedigrees and risk models.
  • Assist with recruiting and screening potential subjects for inclusion in clinical trials according to written protocols; conducting thorough and ongoing informed consent processes; and documenting other research activities.
  • Support the genetic testing process by coordinating specimen collection; maintaining supply of testing kits; preparing test kits for delivery to appropriate laboratories; and assisting with genetic test orders.
  • Facilitate timely patient care by interviewing and screening patients; coordinating telehealth sessions; preparing test results documentation; and conducting patient follow-up when reclassified genetic test results are released or when nationally recognized guidelines are updated.
  • Assists the genetic counselors in managing patient databases by inputting medical and family history; demographics; referral data; genetic testing results; and generating reports.
  • Facilitate the collection of medical records and prior genetic tests to evaluate and intake all relevant information needed to prepare a genetic counseling patient chart.
