About The Position

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center is seeking candidates that possess exceptional assistant knowledge, patient care and technical skills to assist and support Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT) & Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) to triage, stabilize, treat and monitor patients in the hospital. The patient care assistant will perform excellent patient handling task, complete administrative duties, be proficient in medical record keeping, client & patient advocacy, and training.

Requirements

  • Previous experience as a veterinary assistant is required

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent care and ensure cleanliness and comfort of all AMC patients
  • Demonstrate proficiency in AMC Veterinary Assistant skills Levels I-IV.
  • Provide appropriate assistance with emergency patients
  • Accurately reference and update medical records while adhering to prescribed treatment plans.
  • Safely handle and restrain patients of all species, including those in pain, debilitated, or in critical condition.
  • Perform treatments within the scope of a NYS non-licensed team member.
  • Assist in patient monitoring, supportive therapies, treatments, and procedures specific to the cardiology department.
  • Assist with observing/monitoring patients and relaying and change in patient status to LVT or DVM.
  • Participate in DVM and LVT rounds to enhance understanding of disease processes and treatment approaches.
  • Obtain patient history and vitals upon intake, when indicated.
  • Conduct in-house diagnostics such as CBC, blood chemistry, PCV/TS, and coagulation testing per establish standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date service & team schedule and status throughout the day.
  • Support the training and development of Veterinary Assistants.
  • Manage inventory, including ordering and restocking supplies.
  • Communicate professionally with rDVMs, clients, and pharmacy representatives as needed.
  • Operate, maintain & troubleshoot sensitive, high-value medical equipment.
  • Ensure accurate documentation by recording findings on treatment sheets and entering data into Instinct or patient.
  • Advocate for the wellbeing of patients, clients, and the veterinary team.
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
  • Facilitate patient visits
  • Perform accurate record keeping and data entry
  • Communicate changes in patient’s behavior and voids to doctors and technicians
  • Maintain excellent working relationships between departments
  • Ability to lift and restrain animals weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, demonstrating a high level of initiative
  • Must exhibit good organizational, multi-tasking, and communication skills
  • Must have the ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations
  • Must be able to follow detailed protocols
  • Must neatly and correctly fill out paperwork as necessary
