About The Position

The Cafe Shift Lead/Cashier supports efficient, fast-paced service in a high-volume café environment. The role involves substantial guest interaction and excellent customer service, along with demonstrating leadership, modeling appropriate behavior, and motivating the team. The Shift Lead welcomes guests, takes and processes orders, prepares and serves food and beverages, and helps keep café operations running smoothly. The position may include opening or closing the café, assigning tasks and breaks, training team members, monitoring inventory, and maintaining clean, sanitary, and safe work areas. The role also requires accurate cash handling, knowledge of menu items and recipes, and care of café equipment.

Requirements

Experience in food, beverage, retail, and customer service.
Must provide a Food Handlers Certificate within 30 days of employment.
Ability to work as a supportive team member and cooperate with peers and managers.
Positive, can-do attitude and exceptional interpersonal skills to prevent or resolve conflicts.
Ability to process information and merchandise through a computer system and TOAST register.
Effective communication, excellent listening, and customer service skills.
English proficiency to accurately process orders and payments, communicate allergens, follow food-safety and cash-handling procedures, and respond to customer questions and complaints.
Ability to learn and use technical equipment such as an espresso machine.
Strong attention to detail when managing customer requests, ringing up sales, and exchanging currency in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Willingness to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe working environment.
Availability for a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to take direction and follow instructions with attention to detail.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers, take orders, and ring up sales.
Open or close the café, including unlocking or locking it and turning equipment on or off.
Assign tasks and breaks to downline staff.
Ensure staff arrive on time and follow procedures.
Help train new team members during the shift.
Handle cash and credit cards accurately and reconcile cash and currency.
Ensure completion of TOAST transactions and proper cash control according to company policies and procedures.
Assist guests with menu choices, purchases, exchanges, gift cards, and special orders.
Respond to and resolve customer concerns or complaints.
Promote and recommend menu options.
Prepare and serve food items such as soups, sandwiches, and pastries.
Prepare and package to-go orders.
Prepare hot and cold beverages, including coffee drinks.
Follow the current coffee distributor’s procedures and maintain espresso machines, grinders, coffee machines, and other equipment by cleaning, troubleshooting, and reporting needed repairs to the Café Manager.
Clean work areas, guest areas, equipment, and tools to maintain a sanitary environment.
Stock shelves as products get low and maintain a neat, orderly appearance.
Maintain thorough knowledge of Rustic Bakery menu items and recipes and answer guest questions.
Follow company policies and procedures, and work safely in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
Cross-train and assist in other café areas as needed.
Help during busy rushes.
Monitor inventory levels, including cups, milk, syrups, and pastries, and inform the manager when items are running low.
Perform other duties as required.
