About The Position

Support the underwriting team by gathering, evaluating, and analyzing risk information from a variety of sources, including applications, inspections, audits, loss runs, credit reports, and internet research. Review and approve low-hazard risks within delegated authority, ensuring all decisions are thoroughly documented. Partner with underwriters to support the evaluation of more complex or higher-risk submissions by conducting detailed research, performing analysis, and making informed referral recommendations as needed. Contribute to the effective management of agency relationships and assigned territories, communicating directly with agents to request information and provide updates when appropriate. Prepare and deliver a range of reports by collecting, validating, analyzing, and summarizing data, including validation reports, while offering insights and recommendations to support underwriting decisions and business objectives.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree or Technical or specialized knowledge or equivalent, related experience.
  • 1 - 3 years or High School equivalent plus 3 - 5 years.
  • Requires experience in commercial lines.
  • Demonstrated skills in manual and system rating of commercial risks in at least one line of business.
  • Ability to learn all commercial lines and to work within a team.
  • Communicate with customers, exercise judgment and negotiate in routine business situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Required completion of Introduction to Insurance course and working toward AU designation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews risk and approves transactions within a formal letter of authority and assigned territory.
  • Assists underwriters by screening incoming requests and by obtaining required information for review. Sources include, but not limited to, underwriting and rating manuals, Risk Meter, ISO, Best’s, D&B, the Internet, etc.
  • Knowledge of all automated and manual underwriting and rating systems for all assigned lines.
  • Works with Services staff to prepare quotes, new and renewal policies, endorsements and cancellations for underwriters.
  • Assists underwriters by following up with agents for missing information.
  • Administers the “First in” logging system. Utilizes various logging systems to track business transactions, enhances customer service and improve underwriting profitability.
  • Initiates inspections and other routine requests, screens completed inspections, approves inspection within authority, and assists the underwriters in handling recommendations.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned by manager or supervisor.
