About The Position

The Business Analyst, Academics serves as the IT Business Partner for Academics, supporting the student journey from first term through graduation across medical programs and the School of Arts and Sciences. The role is the primary point of contact between Academics and IT for technology needs and improvement initiatives. It builds a detailed understanding of academic operations and turns that knowledge into clear requirements, sound priorities, and initiatives with measurable outcomes. The Business Analyst coordinates appropriate IT expertise and keeps stakeholders informed from discovery through delivery. Development and System Administration own the platforms; the Business Analyst owns the business understanding that defines what should be built and why. The role involves learning academic teams’ processes and the IT delivery framework, identifying stakeholders and their priorities, leading initiative meetings and discovery sessions, and carrying initiatives through approved requirements to Development handoff. The successful candidate will become a trusted partner to academic stakeholders through consistent follow-through, clear communication, and a growing understanding of their goals and challenges. The position is remote or distributed, with occasional travel. Remote work carries the same expectations for responsiveness, visibility, and follow-through as on-site work. The typical schedule is 40 hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional work outside normal hours to support implementations, incidents, or releases. Occasional domestic or international travel may be required. The anticipated salary range is $100,000–$110,000 per year; the final offer may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, location, and education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, information systems, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • At least two years working in Academics, such as academic administration, academic affairs, or academic technology; a prior Business Analyst title is not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to define requirements, map processes, and write acceptance criteria.
  • Working understanding of the enterprise platforms used in the functional area at the level of a knowledgeable business user; system administration is not required.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Personal accountability for commitments and willingness to raise risks and bad news early.

Nice To Haves

  • Power user experience with an LMS platform.
  • Experience working alongside development and QA teams in a software delivery lifecycle.
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps and ServiceNow.
  • Experience in a remote or geographically distributed team.
  • Medical education experience.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve academic processes.
  • Lead discovery sessions and define the business problem, scope, business rules, dependencies, and success criteria before development begins.
  • Document current-state and future-state processes and identify root causes rather than simply addressing requested solutions.
  • Write clear requirements and acceptance criteria that Development and QA can act on.
  • Maintain visibility into initiative status, risks, dependencies, decisions, and next actions, and escalate early when work is at risk.
  • Provide objective analysis of business value, effort, and risk to support prioritization.
  • Support user acceptance testing and confirm delivered work achieves its intended outcome.
  • Assess production changes for downstream impact and inform affected stakeholders before changes go live.
  • Produce process documentation and knowledge articles so work does not depend on any one person.
  • Coordinate relevant IT expertise and keep stakeholders informed from discovery through delivery.
  • Run status meetings, facilitate discussions on new initiatives, and carry initiatives from discovery through approved requirements and Development handoff.
  • Recommend improvements to the functional area and communicate them to the Director.
  • Learn academic teams’ work, the delivery framework, IT team responsibilities, stakeholder priorities, active projects, and pain points.

Benefits

  • Ability to work remotely if more than 30 miles from a local campus or operations location, or as part of a distributed team.
  • Opportunity to work with business and IT leaders and influence what gets built and in what order.
  • Clearly defined work, ownership, and enterprise-wide priorities.
  • Opportunity to learn from tenured Business Analysts, work across multiple universities, and build toward enterprise-level influence.
