About The Position

The Bus Driver will be responsible for driving a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials. This role involves pre-trip inspections, monitoring vehicle functions, refueling, supervising passenger loading/unloading, maintaining records, and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the bus. The driver will also operate campus routes, perform charters, and assist with minor repairs and vehicle maintenance. This is an essential position requiring availability during emergencies.

Requirements

  • Must have, keep and maintain a valid NYS CDL Class B Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brakes.
  • Must be able to be 19A certified as required by New York State DMV.
  • Must have passenger endorsement without restrictions L, Z, N1 or N2.
  • Must have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing for controlled substance use.
  • Comply with the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing act (drug and alcohol testing).
  • Successfully clear a background investigation.
  • Include resume/CV and cover letter with the online application.
  • Provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer (for Out-of-State Applicants).
  • Obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of official start date (for Out-of-State Applicants).
  • Include all relevant work experience and training/education information at time of submission.
  • Be prepared to document proof of qualifications with application.

Responsibilities

  • Drive a full-size passenger bus on and off SUNY property to transport passengers and materials.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections of the vehicle, checking horn, lights, braking system, and tires, and completing required forms.
  • Monitor gauges and refuel the vehicle as necessary.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers and personal property.
  • Post manifests, inventories, and other records of goods and passengers transported, including compiling count sheets from drivers.
  • Transport passengers with disabilities.
  • Operate radio and/or cellular telephones to communicate with dispatch.
  • Keep written records of trips, mileage, stopovers, fuel, bridges, tolls, and passenger counts.
  • Report any vehicle malfunctions and needed repairs to supervisors or maintenance staff.
  • Compile daily bus logs from all drivers.
  • Drive campus routes and perform charters for departments and graduation work for Stony Brook University.
  • Wash, sweep, clean, and fuel buses, vans, and other state vehicles.
  • Perform minor repairs in emergency situations, such as replacing bulbs, adding air to tires, or replacing windshield wiper blades.
  • Map routes, itineraries, and points of call for other drivers and self.
  • Transport vehicles to and from vendors for repairs.
  • Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
