About The Position

This position is responsible for the safe transportation of children and the maintenance of the center's facilities. The role involves driving a bus, performing routine vehicle maintenance, and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of both the bus and the center grounds. The Bus Driver/Janitor also acts as a liaison between families and program staff, completes necessary paperwork, and participates in child safety drills and training. This role requires adherence to all UMOS procedures and regulations, including those related to child safety, hazard communication, and transportation.

Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Possess a valid CDL Certification with passenger and school bus endorsements.
  • Ability to work irregular and/or flexible hours.
  • Be insurable in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Must have a reliable car, valid driver’s license, and adequate insurance.
  • Must have a current DOT physical and possess a current DOT medical card or complete a DOT physical exam prior to transporting children.
  • Must submit to a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
  • Must complete a TB test screening showing absence of Tuberculosis within 30 days of employment or sooner as required by local/state regulation.
  • Must complete approved SIDS & Shaken Baby Training prior to working with children.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training, Infant/Child CPR and First Aid upon hire or prior to transporting children.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in transporting young children preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and conduct maintenance of vehicles, including inspections and routine maintenance.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report any issues.
  • Maintain an inventory of janitorial supplies and ensure proper storage and use of chemicals.
  • Maintain a current list of children transported and ensure daily attendance is taken.
  • Participate in child safety checks at the beginning and end of each route, ensuring all children are secured properly and reporting safety concerns.
  • Serve as a liaison between families and program staff, reporting family information/concerns.
  • Complete all required paperwork, including tracking vehicle operating expenditures and maintenance repairs.
  • Conduct bus evacuation drills monthly and submit reports.
  • Maintain the center in a clean and sanitary condition according to the cleaning schedule.
  • Maintain outside building grounds, including lawn care, trimming, painting, and snow removal.
  • Conduct daily inspections of playground and playground equipment.
  • Transport and assist with supervision of children and parents during meetings, field trips, and at health clinics.
  • Participate in training for serving children with disabilities or special needs.
  • Assist with recruitment plan activities, including recruiting children with disabilities.
  • Provide support or T/TA to other locations with some travel requirements.
  • Develop bus routes in coordination with Family Services and Center Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
