About The Position

This position exists to ensure that regulated facilities are constructed and maintained in accordance with requirements in statutes, rules, and adopted codes by reviewing plans, processing documents, inspecting new construction projects, and completing ongoing inspections. The role involves conducting construction site inspections for code conformance, performing site inspections of building systems, and providing technical assistance to local governments on building, fire, and life safety protection. This is an entry-level position expected to attain certifications to meet Building Inspector III qualifications within twenty-four months of hire. Upon meeting requirements and demonstrating comprehension of DFPC policies, the position is eligible for reallocation to Inspector III. The role also includes completing a Basic Life Safety Code class through CMS.

Requirements

Possession of a current International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Building Inspector certificate.
One (1) year of experience in plan review or design, building inspection, or construction trade work.
Knowledge of architectural/construction terminology and documents including plans, specifics, and other related permit submittal items.
Must be a Colorado resident at the time of application.
Requires successful completion of a background investigation that includes a polygraph exam, a fingerprint based criminal history search, reference checking and driving history.
Current valid driver's license at time of hire, and must obtain a Colorado-issued driver's license within 30 days of hire.
Ability to operate motor vehicles and to travel throughout the state in a variety of weather conditions.

Responsibilities

Conducts independent, document-based and/or on-site, inspections of regulated facilities using state and federal regulations.
Writes clear, concise, and legally defensible statements of deficiencies based on analysis of documented findings and knowledge of regulation sets, guidelines, Principles of Documentation, and program specific protocols, policies and procedures.
Documents and communicates construction and code discrepancies to facility personnel and design professionals and follows up on corrections.
Serves as a primary point of contact for the region specified by the Division.
Performs onsite inspection to determine if the permitted structure meets the requirements of the applicable codes, including confirming construction type, evaluating means of egress, fire-resistant rated assemblies, site and building accessibility, and reviewing subsidiary inspection documentation.
Determines scheduling priorities from assigned workload and continually assesses and adjusts schedule to comply with established time frames.
Attends required trainings and certification exams to obtain requisite certifications to qualify for promotion to the full performance level inspector III.
Performs other work as assigned by the position’s supervisor to meet the mission of the DFPC commensurate with the employee’s knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Inspects facilities for unsafe practices, equipment, and furnishings based on concerns or complaints.
Reviews records, policies, and procedures.
Interviews staff for appropriate training and knowledge of fire safety procedures.
Interviews occupants regarding facility operating conditions and safety issues.
