About The Position

Performs skilled inspection work to ensure compliance with municipal ordinances and regulations governing new and existing commercial, residential and industrial construction. This role involves conducting on-site inspections, meeting with the public and builders to answer code-related questions, resolving problems and complaints, and reviewing construction documents to ensure compliance with adopted codes and ordinances.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of arithmetic to compute measurements taken in the field and perform computations required by construction codes.
  • Knowledge of city building codes and ordinances, laws and regulations concerning building new and remodeled construction.
  • Ability to perform a high percentage of tasks independently without supervisory assistance.
  • Aptitude for brainstorming and problem solving.
  • Ability to be a team player who is able to work in a fast-paced environment with deadlines.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service including a desire to help customers regardless of their circumstance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in writing, as well as through speech, so others will understand.
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external customers and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent plus three years of construction related experience is required or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Individual must obtain state license within one year after date of hire.
  • Individual must pass a credit check, Federal/National background check and have a valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
  • Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 1), Titmus vision screening and an Ishihara vision screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Possession of one or more model code certifications is preferred.
  • Possession of State of Texas Plumbing Inspector’s License is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts on-site inspections to ensure new and remodeled residential, commercial and industrial construction is in compliance with existing building codes including electrical, plumbing, gas, HVAC, and structural.
  • Meets with the public, developers, builders, etc. to answer questions related to codes and their application.
  • Reviews and resolves problems, complaints or violations as referred by the supervisor or as the result of a call-in or referral.
  • Records and reports on daily inspection activities on the department computer system.
  • Reviews various construction documents and ensures construction activities comply with these documents and adopted codes and ordinances as well as interpretations made by Plan Review and Management.
  • Conducts compliance inspections for signs, swimming pools, water and sewer connections, set-back restrictions, etc.
  • Receives and completes special projects assignments related to ordinance compliance.
  • Ensures that code/ordinance interpretations made by Plan Review and Management translate directly to the field inspection operation.
  • Ensures construction plans are reviewed and construction activities are monitored and inspected throughout process for code compliance.
  • Ensures code compliance questions are answered to the satisfaction of all involved and interested individuals.
  • Ensures daily activity reports are properly recorded and maintained.
  • Ensures code violations, complaints and problems are adequately reviewed and resolved with supervisor involvement as needed.
  • Ensures inspections are accomplished in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
  • Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  • Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
