About The Position

Atira Women's Resource Society is an award-winning nonprofit organization known for its inclusionary hiring practices. The Tung Sam Lau program is a new furnished, independent housing program designed for Chinese senior women aged 55+, and downtown Eastside community Indigenous elders who face barriers to securing safe and affordable housing. This position requires staff who identify and live full time as women (including cisgender, transgender, Two Spirit, intersex women) or non-binary to ensure a safe, accessible, trauma informed, and culturally responsive environment for residents. The Building Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the building and grounds, including washing floors and carpets, cleaning bathrooms, kitchens, room doors, and stairwells, disposing of refuse, cleaning windows, and dusting furniture and fixtures. The role involves regular exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, cleaning chemicals, germs, and human waste. The Building Custodian reports to the Program Manager and is responsible for reporting any damage or problems in the building.

Requirements

Grade 10
One (1) month recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
A valid First Aid certificate is required
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention certificate is required (Atira to provide within 3 months of employment)
WHMIS certificate is required
Physical ability to perform the duties of the position and carry out heavy cleaning duties
Candidates must be fluent in Mandarin and/or Cantonese or self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit).
