About The Position

This position is for an 8th Grade Boys Basketball Coach for the SY26/27 school year. The coach will report to the Athletic Director, principal, and local superintendent. This is a part-time, exempt position. The coach will assist in developing players for the varsity team under the direction of the head coach and is responsible for carrying out the program and recommendations established by the head coach. The coach must ensure proper attire during practice and games, collect necessary player forms, use the offensive and defensive philosophy provided by the head coach, and carry emergency forms for all players, scorekeepers, and managers. Responsibilities include equipment distribution and collection, communicating team selections to the head coach, conducting oneself appropriately on the field, knowing the rules, being responsible for player conduct, teaching by example, encouraging positive fan involvement, reporting games, attending clinics with the head coach, assisting with off-season coverage, attending staff meetings, and assisting with scouting. The coach must be loyal to the head coach and the program, supervise team members, and assist in planning schedules, transportation, officials, and game setup. Informing participants of safety precautions and teaching proper skills to reduce injury risk, along with routine equipment checks for safety, are also key duties. The coach is responsible for reporting and care of all injuries. Additional duties include serving as a role model for students, instilling ethical principles and democratic values, and conducting other assigned coaching duties. Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue, and occasional interaction with unruly children are part of the working conditions. This is a one-year contract position, evaluated by the athletic director.

Requirements

  • State of Ohio Teacher’s Certificate (preferred, not required)
  • Coaching and administrative abilities
  • Obtain Pupil Activity Supervision Validation & CPR Certification
  • Ability to relate to and inspire young athletes
  • Knowledge of the care of and prevention of athletic injuries
  • Organizational skills/resources to enhance the program
  • Skill in oral presentations
  • Able to get along with other coaches
  • Desire to invest time during season
  • Knowledge of training and conditioning techniques
  • Ability to diagnose player deficiencies/prescribe corrective activities
  • Demonstrate aptitude for successful completion of tasks assigned

Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing players for the varsity team with direction from head coach.
  • Responsible to the head coach.
  • Carry out the program and recommendations established by the head coach.
  • Ensure proper attire shall be worn during practice and games.
  • Responsible for the collection of appropriate physical cards, emergency medical authorization forms and code of conduct for all players.
  • Use the offensive and defensive philosophy as provided by the head coach.
  • Carry required emergency forms for all players, scorekeepers and managers for all practices and games.
  • Responsible for the distribution and collection of all equipment.
  • Communicate team selection to the head coach prior to announcing to players.
  • Conduct himself/herself on the field at all times in such a manner that he/she will not insult players, officials or spectators.
  • Do not argue a judgment call by the officials.
  • Know the rules.
  • Be responsible for the conduct of your players.
  • Teach by example.
  • Encourage positive fan involvement.
  • Report all games to the middle school and the athletic director.
  • Be willing to attend clinics with head coach.
  • Assist head coach with off-season coverage, attend staff meetings and assist head coach with scouting and other responsibilities that are delegated by head coach.
  • Organize and conduct practices as needed.
  • Be loyal to the head coach and the program at all times.
  • Supervise all team members before, during and after practice and games.
  • Assist in planning schedules, transportation, officials and setting up for home games.
  • Inform all participants of the safety precautions associated with their sport or activity and teach proper skills to reduce chance of injury.
  • Check all equipment routinely for safety concerns.
  • Responsible for reporting and care of all injuries.
  • Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
  • Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
  • Conduct other coaching duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal as permitted by the negotiated agreement.
