A Bookseller is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble bookselling team, welcoming customers, answering questions, and connecting readers with appropriate titles and products. The role also supports the store’s presentation and efficient operation by unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, maintaining merchandise presentation, and serving customers at the register. Booksellers are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility, a positive and energetic approach, consideration for colleagues, cheerful customer service, willingness to learn, and enthusiasm for bookselling. Booksellers learn and perform operational duties using store technology and information tools; maintain book, gifting, toy, and other product displays; receive, unpack, and shelve deliveries; locate products; and support the café team when needed. They also follow loss-prevention procedures and use de-escalation techniques, seeking support for theft or other problematic behavior. The role involves physical activity, including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and frequent walking. Employees may support other stores in the wider Cluster when able and needed. As they develop, Booksellers build knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, educational toys and games, specialty games, hobbies and collectibles, music and movies, and the Newsstand. They use that knowledge to maintain sections and backstock, make customer recommendations, and support sales objectives and new releases. Employees who demonstrate mastery of the role’s skills are expected to advance to Senior Bookseller. Booksellers must comply with company policies and procedures. The listed hourly pay range is $17.25 to $18.75, with the starting rate depending on experience, seniority, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law. Benefits vary according to scheduled hours and location and may include an employee discount, EAP, sick pay, paid time off, paid maternity and parental leave, company holidays, 401(k) with company match, medical, dental and vision benefits, spending accounts, disability benefits, life insurance, transit benefits, and tuition reimbursement.
