About The Position

McLenehan and Associates Chartered Professional Accountants is hiring a Bookkeeper for its remote-by-design Client Advisory Services team. The Winnipeg-based firm serves incorporated Canadian small businesses, providing services ranging from monthly bookkeeping and year-end compliance to Fractional CFO and Virtual Controller services. The role supports a portfolio of approximately four to ten clients, keeping their books current so owners can make decisions using accurate, up-to-date financial information. The position is designed for an experienced, self-directed bookkeeper who can manage client work and priorities independently, while escalating matters requiring CPA judgment to a CPA controller who reviews and coaches their work. The successful candidate will perform full-cycle bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online, including transaction categorization, reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, and month-end close to trial balance. Responsibilities also include managing client accounting email, following up on missing documentation, working with client-side accounting staff, preparing sales tax returns, processing payroll as assigned, and preparing review-ready working papers. The bookkeeper will communicate directly with client contacts, support client onboarding, and identify process improvements and advisory opportunities. The role is remote across Canada, with a working day that substantially overlaps with Central Time. The schedule is four eight-hour days per week, with full-time pay for fewer hours. The advertised salary is $50,000 to $60,000, commensurate with experience. The first 90 days involve onboarding and a gradual increase in portfolio ownership, with the expectation that the employee will manage a full portfolio by days 60 to 90.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of full-cycle bookkeeping experience, taking files through to trial balance; experience limited to accounts payable or accounts receivable alone is insufficient.
  • Hands-on, current proficiency in QuickBooks Online.
  • Demonstrated experience managing several clients or entities at once and independently prioritizing competing deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian payroll processing and GST/HST and provincial sales tax compliance.
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to write clear notes and well-framed questions.
  • Reliable home office setup and secure, stable internet.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • A working day that overlaps substantially with Central Time.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize urgent tasks, communicate professionally, maintain accuracy, and handle client errors diplomatically.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in public practice, an outsourced accounting or client advisory firm, or a virtual bookkeeping firm serving multiple clients.
  • Experience working with a CPA or having work reviewed by a CPA.
  • QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification.
  • Certified Professional Bookkeeper (CPB) designation completed or in progress.
  • Familiarity with receipt capture and workflow tools such as Dext, Plooto, Float, or Karbon.
  • Exposure to Xero or Sage.

Responsibilities

  • Own a daily portfolio of roughly four to ten client files and keep each set of books current and review-ready.
  • Categorize incoming transactions, clear uncategorized and unmatched items, and follow up with clients for missing documentation.
  • Manage the daily inflow to clients’ dedicated accounting email addresses, action matters where possible, and involve the CPA controller when appropriate.
  • Work directly with client-side accounting staff, review their entries, correct errors, and coach them to prevent recurring issues.
  • Set priorities across multiple clients and competing deadlines without day-to-day direction.
  • Communicate directly and professionally with client contacts through proactive follow-up and consistent delivery on commitments.
  • Perform full-cycle bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online, including transaction categorization, bank and credit card reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable management, and month-end close to trial balance.
  • Prepare GST/HST and provincial sales tax returns before deadlines, and process payroll as assigned.
  • Use cloud accounting and automation tools to deliver quality work within client fee expectations.
  • Support onboarding and setup of new Client Advisory Services clients.
  • Prepare working papers and month-end files for controller review.
  • Determine which matters need escalation and batch questions for issues requiring CPA judgment.
  • Flag process improvements and advisory opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • Four-day work week consisting of four 8-hour days, with full-time pay for fewer hours.
  • Remote work from anywhere in Canada.
  • Salary of $50,000 to $60,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Three weeks of vacation plus a paid week during the December holidays.
  • Firm-funded training and professional development.
  • RRSP contribution matching.
  • Prescription, dental, and vision coverage.
