About The Position

SpaceX is seeking a Building Information Modeling (BIM) Specialist to support the development and retrofit of Starship launch infrastructure, including facilities for vehicle builds and re-flight refurbishments. The role leads modeling, integration, and coordination of mechanical systems for Starship and Super Heavy Booster tooling systems and facility infrastructure, and serves as a technical resource for project teams throughout the project lifecycle. The specialist develops and maintains detailed 3D mechanical BIM models and related schematics, diagrams, shop drawings, construction documents, and as-built documentation. The role integrates mechanical systems with other disciplines and production tooling, leads clash detection and constructability coordination, and liaises with internal teams, responsible engineers, project stakeholders, and third-party consultants. It also supports BIM standards, workflows, training, process improvements, and mechanical design decisions. This position is based onsite at Starbase, Texas; remote work is not considered. Travel to SpaceX locations and extended hours or weekends may be required to meet project deadlines and site operations. Applicants must meet applicable U.S. government export-control eligibility requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, engineering technology, or a related discipline; or an associate degree or vocational certification in mechanical design, construction drafting, or design technologies.
  • At least 1 year of experience in 3D mechanical or plumbing modeling.
  • Must be willing to travel to various SpaceX locations for mission-critical projects.
  • Must be flexible to work extended hours and/or weekends to align with residential project deadlines and site operations.
  • Must meet U.S. government export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Occupational trade school qualification or experience in a mechanical technical role or the mechanical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with mechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of International Code Council codes governing mechanical systems and ASHRAE fundamentals.
  • Proficiency with a CAD suite such as NX and Autodesk tools such as Revit, Navisworks, and/or SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency in clash detection, federated modeling, interdisciplinary coordination workflows, and constructability reviews for large-scale or high-rise projects.
  • Experience modeling mechanical systems in industrial environments.
  • Hands-on field experience overseeing mechanical system installations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and upgrade detailed 3D BIM models of mechanical systems, including HVAC, ducting, fans and exhaust, air filtration, sensors, and controls.
  • Own, draft, redline, and maintain mechanical schematics, diagrams, shop drawings, and related documentation, coordinating model placement with system Responsible Engineers.
  • Integrate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, plumbing, and production tooling systems in Starship facilities.
  • Lead end-to-end integration of mechanical systems into facility models and own mechanical documentation.
  • Generate construction documents, P&IDs, schematics, isometrics, equipment schedules, and as-built drawings from BIM models.
  • Liaise with project stakeholders, internal tooling teams, production leadership, responsible engineers, internal design and construction teams, and third-party consultants.
  • Lead mechanical coordination, including clash detection, model coordination, trade deconfliction, constructability reviews, and issue resolution.
  • Support development and maintenance of SpaceX BIM standards, protocols, and workflows for mechanical infrastructure, serving as the primary technical resource for mechanical BIM issues.
  • Lead transitions of mechanical BIM workflows, including data migration, process documentation, and training.
  • Drive continuous process and quality improvements, faster build times, and lower maintenance.
  • Support review and interpretation of mechanical system studies and field data.
  • Prioritize daily tasks, mitigate risks, and participate in cross-functional meetings to provide mechanical BIM expertise for design decisions.
