Billing SME - Product

Elation Health

About The Position

Elation is seeking a Billing SME to join its Billing Team and accelerate AI-powered billing capabilities. The role brings hands-on primary care revenue cycle management, coding, and billing expertise to product development, helping ensure AI features produce accurate, trustworthy outcomes that practices can rely on. The Billing SME will provide direct domain feedback on AI billing features, evaluate coding and billing outputs, define billing-specific success criteria, and contribute billing expertise during product design. The role also connects Product and Design with customer and design-partner practices, and serves as an escalation resource for internal teams with billing questions. The position supports product discovery and design, but does not own roadmap or prioritization decisions, block releases, or replace user research.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on primary care billing and coding experience in a physician practice setting.
  • Deep familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and modifier rules for primary care.
  • Experience with practice management and billing systems such as AdvancedMD, Athena, Kareo, or similar platforms.
  • Working knowledge of commercial and government payer rules, denial management, and claims workflows.
  • Ability to translate billing domain knowledge into clear, actionable product feedback.
  • Comfort collaborating cross-functionally with Product, Design, Engineering, and Customer Success teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with EHR workflows and how billing intersects with clinical documentation.
  • Familiarity with value-based care billing models, including MSSP, CPC+, or direct contracting.
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification or similar.
  • Experience in a SaaS, product, or technology-forward healthcare company.
  • Previous involvement in user testing, product feedback, or design partnership roles.

Responsibilities

  • Test new AI billing capabilities, including coding suggestions, Auto-Queue, Worklist, and ERA/payment posting, and provide feedback based on real coding and billing judgment.
  • Share firsthand knowledge of competitor and adjacent billing systems and workflows to inform product development and identify industry standards and differentiators.
  • Define what constitutes correct coding and billing outputs, establish billing-specific user success criteria, and pressure-test AI-generated outputs before they reach practices.
  • Collaborate with Product Design as a billing co-designer, contributing billing and coding context and success criteria to the design process.
  • Work with Product and Design on discovery and design sessions with design-partner practices and participate in cross-functional design reviews.
  • Translate customer and design-partner practices’ billing language and pain points into actionable product input.
  • Serve as a billing escalation resource for internal contributors, including Enablement, Marketing, Sales, CSMs, Engagement Advisors, Support, and other SMEs.
  • Participate regularly in CSM and Support stand-ups so billing escalations can be triaged directly.
  • Contribute billing and coding requirements directly to product requirements and provide customer synthesis to inform product management prioritization, design, and roadmap discussions.
