The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) works in the Resource Center, a team of nurses, nurse technicians, and behavioral health technicians who support the unit of greatest need each day at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. Resource Center team members care for a variety of patient populations and may support a different unit each day. Under the delegation of the bedside RN, the BHT provides and maintains a safe, therapeutic environment for patients requiring direct observation. The BHT collaborates with the nurse, Behavioral Health team, MSW, and Medical Team to carry out the patient’s established behavioral plan. The role includes training in verbal de-escalation and situational awareness, education about varied patient populations, and cross-training in a limited scope of the Nursing Technician role to learn daily patient care skills and activities of daily living. The role offers the opportunity to support children and families during difficult times by providing care, creating a supportive environment, and partnering with multiple disciplines.
