Battery Thermal Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

As a member of Apple’s Battery Modeling team, the Battery Thermal Engineer is responsible for thermal performance modeling of battery systems across Apple products. The role works closely with Battery Module, Product, Battery Modeling, and Cell Engineering teams from early design stages to analyze and inform product designs. It also provides cross-functional guidance on the thermal impact of product features and identifies design changes and mitigations to improve overall thermal performance. The engineer develops thermal, CFD, and multiphysics finite element models of battery cells, packs, and BMS subsystems; performs advanced thermal CAE simulations; and provides design and trade-off guidance to product development teams through early-stage simulations, including for fast charging and high-power functions. The role also supports simulation-driven design workflows, develops reusable simulation workflows, collaborates with test and reliability labs to validate results, and explores emerging technologies, including AI/ML applications in physics-based simulation.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience in thermal or CFD engineering simulations.
  • Experience with Ansys Electronics Desktop (AEDT) – IcePak.
  • Experience coding in Python.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD and 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in transient thermal simulations of assemblies built using MCAD/ECAD inputs.
  • Experience in electronic heating and cooling and CFD.
  • Experience in AI/ML, including surrogate modeling and digital twins.
  • Experience with NX, COMSOL, and Cadence/Allegro.
  • Experience in electronics layout design.
  • Experience defining and leading a technical development roadmap.
  • Experience in a technical lead role and/or managing engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop thermal, CFD, and multiphysics finite element models of battery cells, packs, and BMS subsystems.
  • Provide design and trade-off guidance to product development teams through early-stage simulations, particularly for fast charging and high-power functions.
  • Develop models or capabilities to convert power maps into thermal outputs.
  • Perform advanced thermal CAE simulations to evaluate boundary conditions at cell, pack, and BMS subsystems around battery packs and within systems.
  • Use simulation tools and solvers to generate models and results.
  • Work with test and reliability labs to develop physical test methods and gather data for results validation.
  • Collaborate with system teams to develop detailed submodels for assembly-level simulations.
  • Develop optimized workflows or reusable templates for regularly required thermal simulations.
  • Work with CAE vendors to drive functionality improvements that better serve the group’s CAE needs.
  • Participate in new technology exploration, including applying AI/ML to physics-based simulations.
  • Contribute to the development of simulation-driven design workflows.
