About The Position

As part of Apple’s Battery Engineering group, the Electrical Engineer designs, develops, and tests battery monitoring units and battery management units (BMUs) for next-generation consumer electronic products. The role covers BMU development from concept through mass production, with a focus on detailed board-level design. It involves designing electronic circuits, analyzing designs, selecting components and integrated circuits to meet performance targets, and working with suppliers to develop custom parts when needed. The engineer also develops test methodologies to verify BMU designs and collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver products on schedule and within budget.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant field, or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a relevant field with 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience in analog and/or power electronics design.
  • Experience in electronic circuit design and development involving mixed-signal systems or relevant experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting data to cross-functional teams and/or management.
  • Detail-oriented, with a commitment to product excellence.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in one or more of the following: power electronics, battery management (fuel gauge and charger), portable consumer electronics, medical electronics, or automotive electronics.
  • Experience with high-volume manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of one or more scripting languages or environments, such as Python, Shell, Unix, or MATLAB, for test automation and data analysis.
  • Understanding of silicon manufacturing processes and how semiconductor devices and associated parasitic subcircuits are created.

Responsibilities

  • Design BMUs from concept through mass production, focusing on detailed board-level design.
  • Advance technology to maximize performance while minimizing volume.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners, including Product Design, System EE, Cell Engineering, Firmware, and Algorithms, to ensure timely and on-budget product development.
  • Investigate problems or issues and prepare reports.
  • Develop schematics and bills of materials (BOMs) to satisfy design requirements.
  • Develop PCB layout guidelines and guide Layout Engineers to meet physical and electrical requirements.
  • Specify custom parts and PCBs for BMUs.
  • Analyze designs using simulation tools and calculations to verify conformance with requirements.
  • Conduct design validation on prototypes and implement the design.
  • Conduct design reviews, incorporate team feedback, and release design documents for builds.
  • Specify production test plans and limits and work with contract manufacturing partners to implement them.
