About The Position

A Barista is an integral member of the Barnes & Noble Café team, welcoming customers cheerfully, answering questions, and helping them find beverages and café items. The role supports the attractive presentation and efficient operation of the Café by stocking deliveries, maintaining the bake case and dining area, preparing food and drinks, and operating registers to provide professional, quick, and friendly service. Baristas are expected to demonstrate reliable attendance, flexibility in responding to store scheduling needs, a positive and helpful approach to work, consideration for colleagues, cheerful customer service, and a willingness to learn. They receive training in café operations and are expected to develop proficiency in technology, merchandising, register operation, receiving and stocking products, food and drink preparation, cleaning, FIFO practices, and loss prevention. They may support the bookfloor team and, when able and needed, other stores in the wider Cluster. As they gain experience, Baristas build knowledge of beverage, bakery, savory, and gifting products; maintain appealing product presentations; support café promotions and sales objectives; recommend customizations; and apply café safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures. Employees who demonstrate mastery of the role are expected to advance to Senior Barista. The employee must comply with company policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Welcome customers, answer questions, and help them select beverages and café items.
Maintain an attractive café presentation, including the bake case, dining area, counter, and retail fixtures.
Operate registers quickly, reliably, and professionally.
Receive, unpack, and accurately stock deliveries.
Prepare food and drinks accurately using product knowledge, recipe guides, and other available tools.
Complete daily and weekly café cleaning tasks and maintain cleanliness.
Follow First In First Out (FIFO) practices and date products correctly.
Support the bookfloor team and, when able and needed, other stores in the wider Cluster.
Learn and use café technology, training tools, merchandising practices, and operational procedures.
Understand loss prevention and de-escalation procedures; identify theft or problematic behavior and seek support as appropriate.
Build product knowledge and use it to support café presentation, promotions, sales objectives, and customer customization recommendations.
Follow café safety, hygiene, and sanitation guidelines and company policies and procedures.
