Bar Lead
About The Position
Urschel, a 100% employee-owned company, is hiring a Bar Lead for the Grand Gardner Hotel, an independent boutique hotel in downtown Valparaiso, Indiana. The hotel has 58 guest rooms and suites, a speakeasy, banquet space, and shared spaces. The Grand Gardner Hotel is an Urschel Development property; Urschel Development is a wholly owned subsidiary of Urschel Laboratories. The Bar Lead is a working leadership role responsible for providing exceptional beverage service and helping guide daily operations during assigned shifts. The position supports bartenders, barbacks, and other staff by maintaining service standards, ensuring beverage quality, assisting with training, and creating positive guest experiences. The ideal candidate is hands-on, dependable, organized, and able to balance guest service with operational leadership.
Requirements
- Able to prepare and serve beverages with consistency, quality, and attention to detail.
- Able to lead by example and support coworkers during busy service periods.
- Able to maintain professional and engaging guest interactions.
- Able to train and mentor team members on service standards and product knowledge.
- Able to handle guest concerns calmly and professionally.
- Able to monitor service flow and adjust priorities as business demands change.
- Able to communicate effectively with team members and management.
- Able to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events as needed.
- Able to remain standing and walking for extended periods during a shift.
- Frequently able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Able to bend, reach, grasp, and perform repetitive hand movements.
- Able to work safely around glassware, beverage equipment, and cleaning products.
- Able to maintain focus and efficiency in a fast-paced hospitality environment.
Nice To Haves
- Previous hotel front office or hospitality management experience is preferred.
- Experience scheduling staff, managing reservations, handling guest concerns, and overseeing daily hotel operations.
- Familiarity with hotel property management systems and Microsoft Office applications is highly desirable.
