About The Position

Assist the Bakery Department Manager in overseeing daily operations, ensuring high-quality production, exceptional customer service, and profitability. Help manage staff, inventory, and ordering, and maintain a safe, sanitary environment while supporting Mackenthun's Exceptional Experience and meeting performance goals.

The role includes supporting staff leadership and development, overseeing bakery production and product presentation, monitoring inventory and orders, serving customers, and helping maintain food safety and sanitation compliance. The Assistant Manager also supports department budgeting and sales performance, collaborates with store and marketing teams, participates in promotions, and contributes to department development and staff training.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• At least 1 year of management experience.
• Strong organizational, problem-solving, and math skills.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including daytime hours, evenings, every other weekend, occasional overnight shifts, and some holidays as needed.
• Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Train, supervise, motivate, coach, and support bakery staff and direct reports.
• Assist with staff schedules, staffing levels, performance evaluations, employee concerns, recruitment, hiring, and onboarding.
• Help ensure staff understand bakery products, food safety, and customer service standards.
• Oversee daily production and ensure products meet quality standards and company specifications.
• Ensure bakery items are fresh, visually appealing, and well-stocked.
• Collaborate with marketing on new bakery items and seasonal offerings.
• Help manage production schedules to reduce waste and prevent overproduction while maintaining product availability.
• Monitor inventory of ingredients, packaging, and supplies; help place cost-effective orders.
• Assist with stock rotation using FIFO, inventory tracking, and related documentation.
• Provide customer service, product recommendations, slicing and packaging assistance, and resolution of customer concerns.
• Implement merchandising strategies and monitor sales trends to help maximize department sales.
• Ensure compliance with health, safety, sanitation, food-handling, and storage requirements.
• Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment through regular safety audits and equipment, tool, and floor cleanliness oversight.
• Support proper staff hygiene and sanitation practices.
• Assist with monitoring department financial performance against the store budget and controlling shrinkage and labor costs.
• Work with vendors on competitive pricing and accurate billing for special orders.
• Collaborate with the store manager, marketing team, other department managers, and other departments to support store objectives and operations.
• Participate in promotional events and marketing campaigns.
• Stay informed about industry trends, customer preferences, and baking techniques; help introduce new products and recipes.
• Participate in planning meetings, contribute to department goals, and support staff training and professional development.
