About The Position

The Baggage Handler Un-Jammer is responsible for the safe and efficient movement, sorting, encoding, and processing of passenger baggage within airport baggage-handling and TSA screening areas. The role helps maintain continuous baggage flow, minimize system disruptions, and support on-time flight departures while complying with airport security and safety requirements. The position is based in operational areas at Charleston International Airport. Work takes place indoors and outdoors, including secure and restricted-access areas. Employees are exposed to moving mechanical equipment, conveyor systems, airline vehicles, heavy machinery, dust, fumes, vibration, variable temperatures, and continuous noise below OSHA action levels. The work involves sustained physical activity and handling baggage weighing up to 75 pounds or more. The schedule is Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The role is offered full-time or part-time, with pay listed as $17.50 or more per hour. Employment with Southeast Airport Services is at-will, and duties may change based on operational needs.

Requirements

Ability to speak and understand basic English and Spanish for safety and work instructions.

Ability to obtain and maintain the required Airport Security Badge and any additional applicable security clearance access.
Must pass a background check and drug screening.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Valid government-issued identification.
Valid Social Security card or employment authorization.
Valid U.S. Passport or Birth Certificate.
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Ability to stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, reach, and twist for extended periods; repeatedly lift and move baggage up to 75 pounds throughout the shift; and work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Good hand-eye coordination and adequate hearing and vision, including close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and color recognition.

Nice To Haves

Prior janitorial or commercial cleaning experience is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Remove baggage from conveyor belts and sort bags to the appropriate baggage piers and transfer points.
Read baggage tags and determine correct routing destinations.
Manually encode baggage using handheld scanners and/or touch-screen tag encoding systems at manual encoding stations.
Apply pier tags and load baggage onto transfer belts at the correct time and location.
Work in TSA screening rooms to remove, sort, and place baggage for TSA screening officers.
Collect and distribute tubs to support baggage system operations.
Lift, push, pull, and carry baggage weighing up to 75 pounds or more continuously.
Maintain cleanliness of assigned work areas, pods, trash receptacles, and surrounding operational spaces.
Follow company safety policies, airport regulations, TSA security protocols, and PPE requirements.
Immediately report equipment malfunctions, safety hazards, and security concerns to supervision.
Perform additional duties as assigned to support operational needs.
