Backend Software Engineer II – API Services / Money Movement

Shree Narayani Networking Solutions•Buffalo, NY
•Hybrid

About The Position

The Money Movement team within Enterprise API Services is seeking an experienced Java software engineer to develop, maintain, enhance, and troubleshoot enterprise APIs supporting money movement across the bank. The approximately 12-person team supports integrations with mainframe systems, ACH processing, credit cards, loans, and deposit accounts. The environment is currently on-premises, with a migration to Microsoft Azure underway. This is a 12-month engagement with possible right-to-hire. The role is based in Buffalo, New York, with a hybrid arrangement: ideally onsite Monday through Thursday and remote on Friday. Three days onsite or alternative arrangements may be considered for an exceptional candidate. Buffalo is the priority because the team is located there; fully remote candidates and candidates working from other bank locations are not being considered. Candidates willing to relocate are acceptable. The stated rate is up to $67 per hour on C2C, and the start date is ASAP. The ideal candidate is an experienced Java backend developer who can contribute quickly, build APIs rather than only consume them, navigate established enterprise applications, debug complex integrations, and collaborate across development teams. Banking experience is beneficial but not mandatory; strong enterprise integration experience from other industries is also relevant.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on Java coding experience at an intermediate-to-expert level.
  • Experience designing, building, maintaining, and consuming REST APIs; substantial API development experience is sought.
  • Hands-on experience developing Java-based services using Spring Boot.
  • Intermediate SQL proficiency for querying and troubleshooting. Microsoft SQL Server is used, but Oracle or comparable relational database experience is acceptable. Database expertise is not required; work may occasionally include schema changes such as adding tables or columns.
  • Experience testing REST APIs with Postman.
  • Understanding of service-oriented architecture and complex enterprise integrations.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams and using Jira.
  • Ability to navigate existing enterprise applications, debug complex integrations, and collaborate across development teams.
  • Availability for occasional after-hours support.

Nice To Haves

  • Azure cloud experience, particularly valuable for the team's current migration.
  • Banking or financial services experience, helpful for understanding transaction workflows and money movement.
  • Experience with enterprise integrations from other industries.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain enterprise-level REST APIs using Java and Spring Boot.
  • Enhance existing applications and implement new functionality.
  • Troubleshoot defects and resolve issues in an established codebase.
  • Use SQL queries to investigate transactions, validate data, and troubleshoot failures.
  • Test REST APIs using Postman, including manual and automated requests.
  • Support integration testing and code deployments across environments.
  • Collaborate with developers and downstream teams supporting loans, credit cards, deposit accounts, ACH, and mainframe integrations.
  • Participate in production releases and provide occasional after-hours support.
  • Contribute to the ongoing Azure cloud migration.
