Remote Backend Engineer (Python/FastAPI)
About The Position
Turing is seeking a Backend Engineer to contribute to software engineering evaluation projects that create datasets for training, benchmarking, and advancing large language models. The work involves collaborating with researchers to curate code examples, provide precise solutions, correct code, and evaluate AI-generated code for efficiency, scalability, and reliability. The role spans backend and frontend software engineering, with work primarily in Python and JavaScript (React and Node.js), as well as C/C++, Java, Rust, and Go. Responsibilities include supporting AI model training initiatives, improving AI-driven coding solutions, building agents that verify code quality and identify error patterns, and assessing model capabilities across the software engineering lifecycle. Engagement is flexible, from 10 to 40 hours per week, for an initial one-month period, with possible extensions. Candidates must be based in the United States. This is a contractor engagement with no medical or paid leave.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of software engineering experience.
- Strong expertise building full-stack applications with Python and JavaScript, including React and Node.js, and the ability to work across backend and frontend codebases.
- Experience deploying scalable, production-grade software using modern languages and tools.
- Deep understanding of software architecture, design, development, debugging, and code quality and review assessment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills for providing clear, structured evaluation rationales.
- Must be based in the United States.
Nice To Haves
- Experience building production systems at Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Meta, or similar high-scale engineering organizations.
- Education from a leading program such as Harvard, Columbia, Princeton, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, or a comparable institution; exceptional experience and skill take precedence over pedigree.
Responsibilities
- Curate code examples, develop solutions, and correct code for AI model training initiatives.
- Evaluate and refine AI-generated code across backend and frontend contexts for efficiency, scalability, and reliability.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve AI-driven coding solutions against industry performance benchmarks.
- Build agents that verify code quality and identify error patterns across full-stack applications.
- Develop hypotheses about software engineering lifecycle steps and evaluate model capabilities across prototyping, architecture and API design, implementation, launch, experimentation, monitoring, and operational maintenance.
- Design mechanisms to automatically verify solutions to software engineering tasks.
