AV Solutions Engineer

The Storytelling Company•Charlotte, NC
•$107,280 - $115,680

About The Position

The AV Solutions Engineer owns AV design for projects from initial client conversations through delivery of a commissioned system. The role partners with sales on technical scoping, client calls, early concepts, and budget estimates, ensuring proposed solutions are buildable. It leads system architecture and produces schematics, block diagrams, rack elevations, and bills of materials (BOMs). The engineer turns creative concepts into practical designs and defines how sensors, show control, lighting, media, and audio interact, including failure behavior. Responsibilities include defining AV networks and coordinating with IT on VLANs, QoS, multicast, AV-over-IP, and security; selecting equipment; reviewing vendor and integrator submittals; and identifying design conflicts with architectural and MEP drawings. The role also participates in commissioning, maintains accurate documentation and as-builts, raises technical concerns early, and shares knowledge with the engineering team. This is an engineering-focused role involving the design and building of AV systems, with pre-sales support as needed. The company builds immersive and interactive spaces and installations. The Charlotte team works closely with teams in Europe. The employee will receive training in the company’s methods and may progress to owning design sets for its most complex projects.

Requirements

  • 5–10 or more years designing and commissioning AV systems, with projects the candidate can discuss.
  • Strong AV system design experience across audio, video, control, and interactive systems.
  • Ability to produce AV schematics, including block and wiring diagrams, in AutoCAD or similar, and to prepare reliable BOMs quickly.
  • Confident AV networking and AV-over-IP knowledge, including VLANs, QoS, multicast, Dante, AES67, and NDI.
  • Hands-on commissioning experience with complex control, DSP, and video.
  • Understanding of installation constraints, cable routes, power, and cooling.
  • Comfort with control code and understanding of how AV systems communicate with software.
  • Ability to clearly explain technical intent to creatives, vendors, IT, and client technical teams.
  • Interest in building immersive and creative spaces.
  • Structured, calm, accountable, receptive to feedback, honest about delivery constraints, and willing to keep learning.

Nice To Haves

  • AVIXA CTS-D (Certified Technology Specialist – Design).
  • Experience with Crestron, Extron, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with DMX lighting.
  • Background in experience design, exhibitions, attractions, or themed spaces.
  • Physical installation experience or construction know-how in the pre-engineering phase.
  • Experience with LED walls and large-format video; training is available for candidates without this experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own AV design for assigned projects from initial client conversations through system operation and customer satisfaction.
  • Work with sales to scope the technical side of pitches, join client calls, sketch early concepts, prepare budget estimates, and confirm proposed solutions are buildable.
  • Lead project AV design, including system architecture, schematics, block diagrams, rack elevations, and BOMs.
  • Translate creative concepts into buildable designs and identify alternatives when a concept cannot be implemented as proposed.
  • Design interactive systems that integrate sensors, show control, lighting (including DMX), media, and audio, including responses to system failures.
  • Define AV networks and coordinate with IT on VLANs, QoS, multicast, AV-over-IP, and security.
  • Select equipment and produce accurate, current, clear BOMs for buyers and installers.
  • Review submittals, verify compatibility, and manage technical risk with vendors and integrators.
  • Compare AV drawings with architectural and MEP drawings and flag conflicts early.
  • Participate in commissioning to verify systems against specifications and maintain accurate documentation and as-builts.
  • Raise technical concerns early in the design process.
  • Share knowledge with other engineers.
  • Support pre-sales when needed.
