About The Position

Assists the staff of the Bookstore/Mailroom through completion of assigned tasks, provision of exemplary customer service, maintenance of a clean and organized work and retail environment, and promotion of retail sales opportunities.

Requirements

  • Must be a regular, full-time student, enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester
  • Must have a completed FAFSA on file with Financial Aid for the current academic year
  • Ability to use a computer, with competence in Microsoft Office programs. Ability to learn and use other software.
  • Ability to learn and use a computer-based point-of-sale system and related equipment.
  • Ability to learn and use mail system software and mail metering equipment.
  • Ability to learn and use various tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to use a telephone to answer questions, transfer calls, and take and relay messages.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Ability to count money and make change accurately in USD, use numerical skills for calculating payment due, amount, and discounts.
  • Ability to alphabetize in order to sort and distribute information.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Attention to detail (good coding and checking skills) are essential for accurate calculations and register entries.
  • Ability to maintain concentration, organization, prioritization, and attention to detail in busy environment in order to accurately interpret information and complete tasks.
  • Ability to conduct oneself in a contained and professional manner so as to avoid workplace accidents that may result in injury to oneself or others or damage enterprise equipment or merchandise.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, using proper grammar, style, and punctuation.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes retail sales through pleasant, professional, attentive customer service. Greets all customers, offers assistance, offers advice on merchandise or services, directs and/or guides customers to products. Maintains a thorough working knowledge of current store merchandise, including locations on the floor or in overstock, as well as offered services in order to advise, upsell, or suggest alternative merchandise.
  • As necessary, assists customers or other visitors with general information or directions to other departments on campus. Maintains a general knowledge of the campus layout and other offices/departments on campus to properly direct guests. When necessary, consults other employees to provide the most accurate and helpful information to guests.
  • Using the point-of-sale system software and hardware (including, but not limited to, PC-style computer cash register, barcode scanner, credit card equipment, etc.) transacts sales, exchanges, and returns of retail merchandise, postal services, and other in-house services.
  • Bags or otherwise neatly packages sold merchandise for customers or for shipping. Takes appropriate packaging steps to protect fragile merchandise when packing/bagging.
  • At various points in the year, assists customers with ascertaining which textbooks or other materials are required for their courses, transacts sales of such. Must learn and maintain knowledge of basic function of Drury Direct/inclusive access options in order to explain availability of texts/courseware in that format, opt-out requirements, etc.
  • Examines incoming merchandise for flaws, errors, and quality. Unpacks, hangs or folds garments, and arranges them on the salesfloor. Unpacks non-apparel merchandise and arranges items on the salesfloor as directed.
  • As requested, transports merchandise to or retrieves merchandise from the Panther Pride Store in the O’Reilly Family Event Center. When transporting merchandise to the secondary store, hangs apparel or otherwise arranges merchandise for sale or display as directed by the supervisor. These activities may, at times, require the student worker to operate a dolly/hand cart/hand truck and/or, if qualified and approved, drive a university vehicle.
  • On special occasions, assists with the placement of event signage and decorations to promote the enterprise. Assists with retrieval of signage and decorations after the event is completed. Such tasks may also extend to setup of and work within a pop-up store elsewhere on campus or retail services outside the store (e.g., book signings associated to a guest speaker, etc.).
  • Sorts, logs, and distributes incoming mail and parcels from various delivery services. As necessary, retrieves incoming mail tubs from the University’s exterior mailbox. This may, at times, require the student worker to operate a dolly/hand cart/hand truck.
  • As necessary, alone, or with assistance from other student or regular staff, delivers mail and parcels to departments at various locations around campus. This may, at times, require the student worker to operate a dolly/hand cart/hand truck and/or, if qualified and approved, drive a university vehicle to facilitate deliveries.
  • Distributes student parcels held at the Bookstore/Mailroom to their intended recipients, checking identification and updating logs as parcels are distributed.
  • Sorts and meters outgoing university and paid personal mail and parcels for pickup by the United States Postal Service. As necessary, transports outgoing mail and/or parcels to the University’s exterior mailbox.
  • Assists customer with processing and shipment of personal mail and/or parcels, including assistance with packing, sealing parcels.
  • Assists customers with other services offered by the Bookstore/Mailroom, including, but not limited to, binding, lamination, and power trimming.
  • Performs general clerical duties, including, but not limited to: answering phones and routing calls; entering parcel information into the appropriate logging system; completion of inventory tasks; filing; etc.
  • Maintains a tidy, organized, attractive storefront through monitoring and re-organizing of apparel racks, apparel stacks, merchandise shelves. Ensures that garments are hung with like items in size-order, straightens hangers, adjusts hanging rods and shelving to restore order, folds/refolds apparel, straightens apparel stacks, pulls merchandise to front of shelving or otherwise arranges to properly and attractively display merchandise, restocks merchandise as needed and as inventory allows.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, attractive storefront and back-of-house area through completion of assigned housekeeping chores, including, but not limited to: dusting merchandise, equipment, shelving, etc. and removing cobwebs; vacuuming throughout store and, when necessary, building lobby and entryway; dry or wet mopping; removal of trash and/or other debris; cleaning windows; cleaning and/or disinfecting computer screens, keyboards, and mice; wiping and/or disinfecting counters and work tables; wiping down steering wheel, dash, and door surfaces of mail vehicles.
  • As assigned to qualified students, drives lesser-used departmental vehicle(s) around campus to charge the battery(s).
  • Performs other tasks necessary to the function of the enterprise as assigned by supervisory staff.
