Automotive Technician - $7,500 Sign-On Bonus
About The Position
CarMax is hiring an Automotive Technician to inspect, diagnose, repair, and recondition vehicles so they meet the company’s standards for safety, quality, and reliability. Technicians perform work ranging from basic maintenance to complex mechanical and electrical repairs, with responsibilities aligned to their experience level. The role is based in a clean, modern, climate-controlled environment and supports both internal vehicle reconditioning and retail service work. This position uses a flat-rate pay model based on labor hours booked and is eligible for commission. Technicians earn an average of $85,000 annually, with top performers earning $110,000 or more. The stated hourly rate is $18.00–$35.40, and the role offers a $7,500 sign-on bonus.
Requirements
- Basic to intermediate experience in automotive repair, including engines, brakes, suspension, or HVAC systems.
- Knowledge of workplace safety protocols and compliance standards.
- Ability to multitask in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail and clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Physical stamina and manual dexterity, including the ability to lift, walk, and stand for extended periods.
- Valid driver’s license.

- Where required by state or local law, maintain ASE certifications in Steering and Suspension (A4), Brakes (A5), Heating and Air Conditioning (A7), Electrical (A6), Engine Repair (A1), Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3), Engine Performance (A8), and Automatic Transmission/Transaxle (A2).
Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicles to meet CarMax standards, with tasks aligned to experience level.
- Perform automotive services ranging from basic maintenance to complex mechanical and electrical repairs.
- Complete multi-point inspections and accurately document findings and completed work according to established processes.
- Repair or replace vehicle components such as trim, seals, and panels to support reconditioning efforts.
- Assist with alignment, suspension, and performance diagnostics, gaining independence as skills develop.
- Uphold CarMax values of integrity, respect, transparency, and accountability while developing technical expertise.
- Collaborate with teammates to meet production goals.
- Follow CarMax Environmental, Health and Safety requirements and maintain a clean and orderly work area.

- Up to 48 hours of sick time per year, accrued each pay period, for eligible full-time hourly or commissioned associates.
- Between 80 and 200 hours of vacation time per year after a 90-day waiting period, based on years of continuous service, for eligible full-time hourly or commissioned associates.
- Eight hours of pay for each of six scheduled paid holidays per year, plus one floating holiday, for eligible full-time hourly or commissioned associates.
- Holiday Premium Pay when an eligible associate works on a scheduled holiday due to business need.
- For full-time salaried associates, paid time away as needed for sick leave, vacation, bereavement, jury duty, holidays, and floating holidays, subject to manager approval.
