About The Position

Perform as entry level automotive technician/mechanic. Perform preventative maintenance and minor to intermediate repairs. Assemble, maintain, repair, adjust and modify equipment, vehicles and/or facilities and machinery; operate vehicles, equipment and/or machinery. This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming’s Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED, Vocational School, on-the-job training or associate’s degree
  • 0-2 years working experience
  • Valid Class C driver’s license with motor vehicle (MVR) that is compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP.
  • Ability to obtain First/Aid CPR certification within 12 months of hire
  • Ability to obtain ASE Entry-level Technician (Automotive) within 12 months of hire, including the following: ASE Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Certification, ASE Automobile Service Technology Certification, ASE Brakes Certification, ASE Electrical/Electronic Systems Certification, ASE Engine Performance Certification, ASE Engine Repair Certification, ASE Heating and Air Conditioning Certification, ASE Manual Drive Train and Axles Certification, ASE Suspension and Steering Certification
  • Must be able to pass all drug and/or alcohol screenings required by the UW Drug and Alcohol Policy and applicable DOT regulations

  • Basic mechanical knowledge, aptitude and trouble shooting
  • Basic knowledge of shop maintenance policies and procedures
  • Strong understanding of vehicle systems (engine, transmission, brakes, electrical)

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues in gasoline-and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment using advanced diagnostic tools and software.
  • Perform routine and complex maintenance tasks, including fluid changes, component replacements and general system checks.
  • Conduct comprehensive inspections and preventive maintenance to ensure safe and efficient vehicle operation.
  • Disassemble, inspect, repair, overhaul or rebuild components such as bearings, axle seals, brake systems, water and fuel pumps, compressors and radiators.
  • Repair and rewire electrical systems; realign and adjust braking and suspension systems for optimal performance.
  • Perform welding, cutting and minor bodywork repairs as required.
  • Accurately document all maintenance and repair work, including labor and materials used, in compliance with operational standards.
  • Interpret technical manuals, schematics and service bulletins to guide diagnostics and repair procedures.
  • Ensure shop equipment is properly maintained and safe for daily use; adhere to all safety regulations and protocols during operations.
  • Operate tools, equipment and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Test-drive vehicles to verify the success of repairs and confirm functionality.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Participate in performance-related goal setting and achievement to meet personal and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Attend and participate in training and other personal professional development activities.
