About The Position

The City and County of Denver is seeking a Fleet Technician I for its Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI). DOTI aims to enhance the quality of life in Denver by delivering effective, high-quality, safe, and equitable public infrastructure and services, guided by principles of investing in people, operating with discipline, using data, and delivering results. The Fleet Management team is responsible for over 2,500 vehicles and equipment, maintaining a high availability rate, and overseeing vehicle use, maintenance, replacements, purchases, heavy equipment, and fuel contracts for city and county vehicles. This role is suitable for early career or experienced mechanics who enjoy working on a diverse range of vehicles. The Fleet Technician I will be assigned to a fleet shop line to perform repair, inspection, and maintenance on light, medium, and/or heavy fleet vehicles and equipment, utilizing various fuel technologies including gasoline, diesel, electric, CNG, and other alternative sources. The position offers access to the latest diagnostic tools and manufacturer training.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate
  • One (1) year of experience in the maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and/or alternative/hybrid powered equipment or one year of experience in the repair of tires, tubes, wheels, hydraulic brakes, air brakes, and/or parking brake systems in an automotive repair shop or fleet department
  • A valid Driver's License at the time of application
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL "B") with appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of employment and must be kept current as a condition of employment
  • A Colorado Refrigerant Registration and a Colorado State Emission inspection license by the end of probation
  • Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning as certified under section 609 of the Clean Air Act by an EPA-approved program by the end of probation
  • By position, Underground Storage Tank Class A, B, or C Operator Certification by the end of probation
  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the English language for commercial driving positions
  • Ability to converse with the general public in English
  • Ability to understand highway traffic signs and signals in English
  • Ability to respond to official inquiries in English
  • Ability to make entries on reports and records in English

Nice To Haves

  • An associate degree (or Trade School Certification) in automotive maintenance or similar
  • ASE Airbrake Certification
  • The ability to be flexible in hours
  • The ability to work on weekends or overtime if needed

Responsibilities

  • Inspect equipment brought to shop for structural integrity and other potential safety and maintenance problems
  • Repair or replace worn parts not requiring major mechanical work
  • Identify and report to supervisor any major problems requiring mechanical attention
  • Inspect primary and auxiliary operating systems for loose and worn parts, hydraulic system for faulty cylinders, hoses, or fittings, and air systems
  • Remove, repair, and replace wheels and tires on equipment
  • Respond to emergency road service on tires, tubes, and wheels of specialized and heavy-duty automotive equipment, utilizing hydraulic jacks and lifts
  • Remove and replace sealed beam lighting units, light bulbs, light bars, and fuses
  • Operate all types of vehicles and equipment to servicing and storage area
  • Wash and steam clean equipment and clean work area
  • Participate in snow removal duties as assignments
