About The Position

The Office of Legal Affairs is a statutorily created distinct budgetary office of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Public Safety Services. The Office of Legal Affairs is responsible, in accordance with applicable laws and under the supervision and direction of the Deputy Secretary, for providing legal consultation and representation to the other offices within the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Public Safety Services. We’re looking for attorneys to join our legal division — a proactive, people-focused team working to attract and support the talent that drives our mission forward. The attorney will serve as an attorney/legal advisor in the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Public Safety Services, Office of Legal Affairs, Office of Motor Vehicle Section. Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal assistance to the Office of Motor Vehicles at a specialist/subject matter expert level regarding legal matters involving driver's licenses and vehicle registrations, as well as Driving School regulation.
  • Represent the Office of Motor Vehicles in state administrative law and civil courts regarding licensure suspensions and appeals.
  • Help with generalized legal assistance and representation as required by the Deputy General Counsel for the Office of Motor Vehicles.
  • Oversee specific legal implementation of litigation regarding commercial motor vehicle and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) matters for the Office of Motor Vehicles and assists in the preparation of a legal strategy.
  • Provide legal support services to the Office of Legal Affairs and the Office of Motor Vehicles Driving School regulation and other generalized matters.
  • Serve as an assistant to the Deputy General Counsel for the Office of Motor Vehicles regarding litigation and legal representation for the Department of Public Safety and Correction (DPS&C) Public Safety Services (Department), Office of Motor Vehicles, in the performance of matters in state appellate courts and federal civil courts.
  • Represent OLA at meetings, conferences, and seminars attended by various federal, interstate, state, parish, municipal, and parochial agencies, political subdivisions, advisory groups, and other organizations concerned with or having business with the Office of Motor Vehicles.
  • Stay up to date on the needs of the Office of Motor Vehicles and training of the office with regards to licensure.
  • Provide training and guidance as required to meet the needs of the office.
  • Provide complex legal research for the Office of Legal Affairs, either generalized when ordered by a supervising attorney or specifically in the area of the FMCSA.
