About The Position

This position serves as legal counsel for the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and Child Welfare Services (CWS) within one of nine regions throughout the State of Louisiana. The role specializes in juvenile and family law, social services law, and programs. The incumbent is responsible for being knowledgeable about all special laws relevant to the functioning of CWS. DCFS's mission is to empower communities and improve lives by delivering responsive, inclusive, and forward-thinking public services, serving the people of Louisiana with integrity, innovation, and a deep commitment to equity.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal counsel for the Department of Children and Family Services and Child Welfare Services (CWS).
  • Specialize in juvenile and family law, social services law, and programs.
  • Be knowledgeable of all special laws relevant to the functioning of CWS.
  • Prepare all legal documents, including affidavits, petitions, surrenders, and other evidentiary documents for court presentations.
  • Handle all stages of litigation from trial to final appeals.
  • Assist program staff at all program stages.
  • Assist program staff and medical/psychological experts in investigations and multidisciplinary team staffing's.
  • Make recommendations concerning department programs.
  • Monitor legal matters and cases involving or affecting the department and their potential effect on program operations.
  • Recommend and participate in efforts to update and revise provisions in state and federal law in the areas of Child Welfare.
