About The Position

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Facilities Management & Capital Projects is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic oversight, planning, and execution of all facilities-related functions for university-owned and managed buildings. This includes capital construction, renovations, preventive maintenance, custodial operations, sustainability initiatives, and emergency preparedness.

Requirements

  • At least 10 or more years of professional experience working in facilities management, preferably in public higher education of 5,000- 12,000 students.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, sustainability practices (LEED, etc.), smart building technologies, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience interacting with state officials to ensure construction projects are completed in accordance with the appropriate state regulations.
  • Experience in crafting integrated capital plans for state supported higher education institutions.
  • Virginia Driver’s License with positive points balance OR can obtain a Virginia Driver's license within 90 days of Hire. This position requires the use of University vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Research Space and Equipment Planning and Project Management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the continued development and implementation of the Campus Master Plan, ensuring alignment with institutional mission, enrollment growth, and sustainability goals.
  • Manage capital outlay requests, ensuring compliance with state funding requirements and timelines.
  • Provide executive leadership for all aspects of facilities operations, including building maintenance, custodial services, HVAC systems, energy management, motor pool, and mail services.
  • Ensure buildings and grounds are maintained to the highest standards of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
  • Oversee implementation of smart building technologies, including automation systems, and energy dashboards to drive performance and sustainability.
  • Monitor compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to facilities and construction, including ADA, OSHA, and fire safety codes.
  • Implement and monitor preventive maintenance schedules, energy efficiency initiatives, and building performance assessments.
  • Work closely with Human Resources to develop and implement long range plans for facilities division employees’ training and enhancement of employees’ technical expertise, skills and abilities so that they are better prepared to service the university, and to prepare for future promotion opportunities.
  • Develop facilities employees’ interpersonal skills to target customer relationships and services.
  • Coordinates the work and provides leadership to a wide range of professional and technical staff members and consultants engaged in architecture, engineering, campus mail and deliveries, budgets, facility inventories, facilities operations, and maintenance as well as other technical services.
  • Seeks out opportunities to improve operations and make recommendations for their implementation.
  • Willingness to take on additional work as needed, particularly during peak times, to ensure the smooth operation of the unit.
