About The Position

The Chemical Engineering Research & Development Department (CERD), within Small Molecule Process Research and Development and the Research & Development Division, is seeking an engineer for a hands-on role involving process development and scale-up in laboratories, the kilo lab, pilot plant, and commercial manufacturing sites. Under scientific and administrative direction, the engineer designs, plans, and executes experiments for small-molecule and cross-modality (such as antibody-drug-conjugate) active pharmaceutical ingredient (API, or drug substance) process development, technology development, and production scale-up. The role may include daily pilot-plant production activities, ensuring compliance with safety, good manufacturing practice (GMP), and environmental requirements. Work includes equipment setup, batch processing, troubleshooting, and technical investigations. The engineer may also help introduce new processes at internal or external manufacturing sites as products are brought to market. The role calls for innovation, creativity, self-initiative, planning and organizational ability, and strong oral and written communication skills. Approximately 10–15% travel is required.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in chemical or biochemical engineering from an accredited college or university by June 2027.
  • Experience performing lab-based research or process development in a chemical engineering-related area.
  • Familiarity with pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis unit operations, such as reaction engineering, separations, and crystallizations.
  • Highly effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, writing, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10–15%.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with process scale-up and/or technology transfer from laboratory to pilot plant or production scale.
  • Experience applying statistical experimental design (such as Design of Experiments) and/or process modeling.
  • Experience with chemical engineering-related technology development.
  • Direct experience with pharmaceutical drug substance process development.
  • Knowledge of organic chemistry and small-molecule synthesis unit operations.
  • Knowledge of cross-modality unit operations, such as antibody-drug-conjugate operations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and execute experiments for small-molecule and cross-modality API process development, technology development, and scale-up.
  • Perform hands-on process development and scale-up work in laboratories, the kilo lab, pilot plant, and commercial manufacturing sites.
  • Perform daily production activities in the pilot plant as needed while ensuring compliance with safety, GMP, and environmental requirements.
  • Set up equipment and perform batch processing.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and technical investigations.
  • Help introduce new processes at internal or external manufacturing sites as products are brought to market.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision healthcare benefits.
  • Other insurance benefits for employees and family.
  • Retirement benefits, including 401(k).
  • Paid holidays.
  • Vacation.
  • Compassionate and sick days.
  • Eligible for annual bonus and long-term incentive, if applicable.
