About The Position

The Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan is seeking a mid-career colleague for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of associate professor in Educational Studies, focusing on science teaching and/or the learning sciences. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in science education, with an emphasis on community-engaged and/or place-based education, a deep understanding of scientific cultures and practices, and expertise in science education and the learning sciences. The role involves contributing to science teaching and learning in a diverse society with inequitably resourced schools and unequal opportunities for children. A track record of securing external funding for scholarly work is expected. Successful candidates may have diverse interests, such as designing learning environments for social justice issues, partnering with community groups on urban issues, examining how contexts shape science learning opportunities, or focusing on the intersection of science education, policy, and reform.

Requirements

Doctorate in science education, the learning sciences, or a demonstrable equivalent.
Strong grounding in science education and place-based and/or community-engaged research.
Sustained experience with securing grants to support research.
Experience teaching at the K-12 level and higher education level.
An established program of research and publication in science education and the learning sciences commensurate with rank.
A commitment to research and publication that informs science-related teaching and learning, particularly in school settings, related to a wide variety of learners and communities.
A commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Marsal Family School of Education.
A sustained interest in collaborating with different constituencies in the Marsal Family School of Education, schools, communities, and the university to engage in design, instruction, and research.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Educational Studies program, focusing on learning, the design of learning environments, teaching, curriculum, and specialization courses in science education.
Teach courses in the Learning, Equity, and Problem Solving for the Public Good (LEAPS) undergraduate program, including Science in the City and/or related courses.
Supervise dissertations.
Foster the development of science education students as scholars, researchers, and teacher educators.
Support science education students on research projects.
Support programmatic needs within the LEAPS program.
Work across Educational Studies programs to maintain and advance the school's reputation in content-area teaching and learning in science education and the learning sciences.
Collaborate with different constituencies in the Marsal Family School of Education, schools, communities, and the university for design, instruction, and research.
