About The Position

The Associate Director (Career Services Specialist, Sr, level 14) works in conjunction with the Director to provide coaching, programs, and resource support for career services provided to Duke Master of Quantitative Management (MQM) students. In this capacity, s/he ensures a comprehensive program of workshops, counseling, job search and interview preparation, as well as other services that prepares them to succeed in the job market. The Associate Director plays a key role in ensuring consistency with and maximizing efficiencies between the career services offerings of the MQM, MMS, MBCS and MBA programs. Fundamental to success in this role will be proactive information sharing, collaboration, and communication across the CMC and within Fuqua. This position reports to the Director for Specialty Master’s Career Services and works closely with other Career staff supporting Specialty Masters programs, the broader CMC team and MQM program staff.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree preferred, especially an MBA or a Master’s in Counseling
  • 1 – 5 years corporate recruiting and/or career services experience recommended
  • Strong portfolio of communication skills including presentation skills, with previous experience developing and presenting career development workshops and programs, and capacity to communicate information and key messages to diverse stakeholders, from senior executives to prospective students
  • Strong ability and willingness to advise MQM students on career development and job search topics is essential
  • Interaction with corporate recruiters, alumni, staff, and students is integral to the position, so strong interpersonal and team skills are essential
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex problems and their implications within the parameters of Duke University and The Fuqua School’s core values, practices, and policies and to apply those parameters to meet the needs of multiple stakeholders in resolving problems
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability and initiative to see gaps in the MQM end-to-end career services experience and to fill needs or take on special projects as needed
  • Sharp stakeholder focus (in this case, the current or prospective employer and the MQM student).
  • Must be comfortable in a technology-enabled environment. Capacity to learn CMC technology and train others

Responsibilities

  • Advise students on both an appointment and walk-up basis. Vary counseling style according to student’s individual needs and concerns. Counseling may include providing assistance and support to: Identify students’ career interests through self-assessment; Develop a job search strategy reflective of the student’s interests, skills, and goals; Review and polish resumes, cover letters, and other correspondence; Conduct mock interviews and provide feedback to improve interview techniques; Decide between employment offers, considering short and long-term career goals; Develop a strategy to negotiate an employment offer.
  • Develop deep expertise about MQM students and opportunities to effectively address the unique components of the job search in various job functions and industries. Stay current on recruiting practices through interaction with employers and attendance at relevant conferences or seminars to optimize advice.
  • Assess needs, plan, deliver, and evaluate a comprehensive program of career development and job search workshops for MQM students. Programs must be creatively designed and well-taught with the capacity to not only teach students about these subjects conceptually, but also to change their job search behaviors in a substantive, sustainable manner. Topics include, but are not limited to: Self-assessment, Job search strategy, Creating a career marketing plan, Networking, Branding statement, Resumes, Cover letters & correspondence, Interviewing, Job offer evaluation & negotiation, Succeeding on the job.
  • Collaborate closely with those designing and delivering the two-term Business Communications course to deliver career content through that class.
  • Identify keynote speakers and panelists who complement key CMC messages, help students’ build critical skills, and lend credibility to our programming.
  • Identify resources relevant to the MQM job search and work to make those resources available to our students.
  • Manage and update MQM career resources site on the Fuqua LMS (Canvas).
  • Draft content and review weekly career newsletters with upcoming events, resources, and coaching tips for MQM students.
  • Represent the Fuqua Career Management Center to prospective students, alumni, other offices within the university, corporate recruiters, and other stakeholders.
  • Interpret recruiting policies for students at both the group and individual levels and enforce those policies to protect the Duke MQM brand. Collaborate with Director to decide upon and communicate penalties for violating those policies as appropriate.
  • Contribute to effective, integrated, and well-timed messaging by the CMC through a variety of communication media – in person, at group sessions, via email, through the Web, etc.
  • Design, plan, and implement appropriate opportunities for students to provide feedback on CMC programs, workshops, and services. Analyze and interpret results to identify accomplishments and improvement opportunities. Communicate resulting suggestions and actions, as appropriate, to other CMC staff and students.
  • Contribute to producing accurate and industry-compliant employment outcome reports annually, which includes collecting and analyzing employment data for annual reports.
