About The Position

This position is responsible for recording and reconciling the financial results for various Markel reporting segments, divisions, and insurance companies as part of the Close, Control & Reporting department within Markel’s Finance group (Finance). CCR is responsible for the controls and processes around reporting Markel’s division and segment results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • 1 to 3+ years of accounting experience preferred
  • Strong computer skills including a high degree of proficiency within Excel and Microsoft products.
  • High degree of flexibility and responsiveness to change in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to research, analyze and solve problems.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively and support team efforts.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
  • US Work Authorization required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform journal entries and complex account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with audit requirements.
  • Participate in the monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger closing and reporting processes, including preparation of division and segment pack schedules to be presented to Finance leadership and business management.
  • Assist with the preparation of income statement and balance sheet packages and related comprehensive analysis for variances and trends.
  • Prepare and support monthly bank account reconciliations in accordance with CCR close schedules and internal control requirements.
  • Assist in the analysis and preparation of the cancellation allowance process to ensure accurate premium recognition.
  • Complete intercompany wire settlements and balancing of intercompany accounts.
  • Participate in the internal and external audit process.
  • Work closely with other functional areas (i.e., corporate accounting & reporting, statutory reporting, business support, underwriting, disbursements, treasury, actuarial, reinsurance and program accounting) to resolve issues and support achievement of business goals.
  • Collaborate with teammates and initiate ideas with management to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participate in other strategic accounting and business projects as they arise.
  • Other duties as required.
