About The Position

The Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor for its Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies Division. This full-time, nine-month position, starting August 1, 2027, is part of a strategic faculty cluster focused on the communicative foundations of democratic society. The university is investing in scholarship that enhances understanding of communication, public knowledge, citizenship, civic participation, and the institutions that support democratic public life. The department aims to strengthen its scholarly traditions and foster interdisciplinary exchange. The ideal candidate will conduct research that advances humanistic and critical scholarship in communication, rhetoric, and/or media, examining how communicative practices influence public narratives, civic identity, democratic culture, collective memory, public argument, or participation in civic life. Scholarly interests may include rhetoric, political discourse, democratic culture, media and public culture, citizenship, civic identity, public memory, publics and counter-publics, social movements, and related areas that illuminate communication's role in democratic culture. Diverse humanistic, interpretive, historical, qualitative, critical, rhetorical, textual, ethnographic, and related approaches are welcome, provided they are united by a strong theoretical commitment to understanding communication and democratic practices. Successful candidates will be expected to build and maintain a robust scholarship program, publish in leading journals, demonstrate the potential to secure external funding, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and engage in departmental, university, and professional service. As part of the Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies Division, the candidate will contribute to the growth of undergraduate and graduate education and strengthen a key area of strategic investment for the department. The department offers BA and BS degrees in communication, media, and journalism, and MA and PhD degrees in Communication. It comprises over 50 faculty, more than 35 graduate students, and approximately 1,700 undergraduates, valuing disciplinary excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and innovative teaching. The Humanities & Critical/Cultural Studies Division is one of three academic divisions, alongside Communication & Media Science and Journalism & Media Practices, fostering a rich intellectual environment. Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Communication or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated promise of developing a distinguished program of humanistic and critical scholarship in communication.
  • Evidence of excellence or strong potential in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to mentor graduate students.
