About The Position

The Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Journalism. This full-time, nine-month faculty position is part of a strategic initiative to examine the communicative foundations of democratic society. The university is investing in scholarship that enhances understanding of communication, public knowledge, citizenship, civic participation, and democratic institutions. The successful candidate will be expected to advance scholarship in journalism and media by studying how journalism, news, and media institutions produce, distribute, and sustain public knowledge in a democratic society and evolve as democratic institutions. We are looking for a scholar with a strong theoretical foundation and a rigorous methodological approach whose research is theoretically significant, methodologically rigorous, and socially consequential. The role involves developing and sustaining a strong scholarship program, publishing in leading outlets, seeking external funding, teaching foundational and specialized courses, and contributing to departmental, university, and professional service. The successful candidate will join the Journalism & Media Practices Division and contribute to its growth and the department's strategic investments. The department offers BA and BS degrees in communication, media, and journalism, and MA and PhD degrees in Communication. It comprises over 50 faculty, more than 35 graduate students, and approximately 1,700 undergraduate students, valuing disciplinary excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and innovative teaching. The Journalism & Media Practices Division is one of three complementary academic divisions, fostering a rich intellectual environment. Recent investments have strengthened the department through faculty recruitment, expanded graduate education, and enhanced research infrastructure. Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Journalism, Mass Communication, Communication, Media Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated promise of developing a distinguished program of scholarship in journalism studies.
  • Evidence of excellence or strong potential in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to mentor graduate students.

Nice To Haves

  • Evidence of an emerging record of pursuing or securing external funding appropriate to career stage and area of scholarship.
  • Professional journalistic experience that complements a program of scholarly research.
